Faculty Attend SPHERE Opening

Lisa Perry
By Lisa J. Perry, Director of Multicultural Affairs

Headmaster Graham Cole, Assistant Headmaster Nancy Spencer, and new members of the Westminster faculty recently participated in the opening program of SPHERE (Supplementary Program in Hartford for Educational Reinforcement and Enrichment) designed to start the new academic year with collective support for diversity and multiculturalism at schools that participate in the program.

The August 31 event was held at Watkinson School in West Hartford and was attended by representatives of the 10 schools that participate in the SPHERE consortium: Avon Old Farms, The Ethel Walker School, Kingswood-Oxford School, The Loomis Chaffee School, Miss Porter’s School, Mooreland Hill School, Renbrook School, Suffield Academy, Watkinson School, and Westminster School.

The keynote speaker for the program was the Rev. Robert Thompson from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. He shared his experiences and observations on how schools tackle the issues of affirming, celebrating, and enhancing diversity. An alumnus of Exeter himself, the Rev. Thompson drew on his own challenges and triumphs while attending Exeter and serving for more than 20 years as its chaplain and as a faculty member. He also shared his experiences in building and funding a school in Ghana, and in taking Exeter students to work at the school.

The upbeat and informative program ended with a fabulous meal and great conversation.

SPHERE traces its beginning to an Educational Enrichment Summer Program for eighth, ninth, and tenth grade students in Hartford created in 1965 by Westminster Headmaster Pete Keyes and Phillips “Nibs” Smith. Today after much growth, reorganization, and the participation of 10 private schools, SPHERE is committed to promoting multiculturalism and diversity in school communities. SPHERE holds a number of workshops, programs, and meetings throughout the year with various branches of SPHERE for school leaders, deans of faculty, and directors of diversity. Members of these groups meet regularly to discuss issues of diversity at their schools, to share ideas, to offer support, and to help foster inclusive and diverse communities, programs, and systems. Further information about SPHERE can be found on its Web site at www.SPHEREschools.org.
