Sometimes Golf is Like This

The Martlets ventured to Wintonbury Hills CC this afternoon and ran into a determined Ethel Walkers team looking for its first victory of the season, one which they achieved decidedly 4-1. In a series of close matches, the black and gold could not muster that something extra to close out the close ones today. Sometimes golf just goes like that. Ella Ungerman ‘24 would seize the team’s only win of the day in a back and forth match of two steady golfers looking to find the edge. Ungerman’s beautiful strike on the par 3 9th would end up eight feet from the pin, and two putts later her victory was secured. Cindion Huang ‘25 would not be so lucky with her match at all even on the very same hole. She would find a deep greenside bunker and succumb to her opponent on the final putt. Huang’s solid score of 42, however, would be the low round of the day for the team. Annabelle Krieger ‘27 would continue that pattern, playing a solid match throughout but also falling one short on that same pesky final par 3. Kreiger, however, found a nice rhythm to her swing and played wonderfully from tee to green all afternoon. Both Taylor Horgan ‘24 and Elise Park ‘25 ran into solid competitors and could never catch up to their opponents who both took the lead early.  Grace Lee ‘26, playing an exhibition round, had good success with her driver and her long irons, gaining confidence along the way.  Her solid par on the seventh hole was a nice highlight for sure. The girls will need to regroup and bring their best stuff for their quad match against Loomis, Williston, and Choate on Wednesday.
