Team Comes Up Just Short

On a sunny and windy afternoon on the brand new Harrison Field turf, Westminster competed hard for all four quarters, but ultimately came up just short against a strong Deerfield team. Deerfield controlled play early in the game, jumping out to a 3-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Martlets defense, led by strong play from Brooks Berthiaume ‘27, held Deerfield scoreless in the second quarter and Wyck Deery ‘24 added one of his two goals for the Martlets to take the score to 3-2 at halftime. The two squads traded goals in the second half with Wyck and his classmate James Frangos ‘24 scoring goals for the Martlets, bringing the score to 5-4 with two minutes to play. Despite Westminster’s aggressive defensive efforts, Deerfield successfully controlled the ball and added a final goal in the final seconds to secure their victory. Ty Lambert ‘26 was the player of the game, scoring the first goal, winning hard fought ground balls, and battling all day on defense and in the face off circle. Both goalies (Derek Logan ‘27 and Jordan Pham ‘27) played well, quarterbacking the defense and making twelve saves in total. The takeaway from Saturday is that the Martlets need to work on ball control this week in practice. The coaches, however, are pleased with the team’s effort and focus so far and we look forward to our first road game of the year at Choate on Wednesday.
