Martlets Fall to AOF

The Martlets took to the road for a rematch with Avon Old Farms. The first game between the teams was a lopsided victory in favor of the Winged Beavers. Determined to prove themselves a better team, Westminster came ready to play. A tight-checking first period ended with Avon leading 1-0. The lead grew to 2-0 within the first five minutes of the second period, as the Martlets were their own worst enemies coming out of the break. Avon capitalized on poor passing and loose net front coverage. The Martlets fought back with two goals just twelve seconds apart late in the second frame. Will McCarthy ‘25 tallied both goals, with assists going to his linemates, Reed Ghriskey ‘26 and Benji Hanson ‘27. Both goals developed from excellent passing plays out of the corner, leading to tap-ins by McCarthy, who was left alone on the back post in both scenarios. Credit to Avon, though, as they grabbed the lead right back, scoring the next two goals. Their fourth was an empty-netter as Westminster desperately tried to make a second comeback with goalie Danny Maher ‘26 pulled for the extra attacker. Lane Gallagher ‘26 made the final score a little closer, 5-3, with a late unassisted goal. While it was not the result Westminster was looking for, it was a significant improvement over the first go ‘round with the Winged Beavers. The Martlets finish their season schedule with a trip to Berkshire on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is at 4:30 on the big ice.
