Martlets Fall to Suffield

The Martlets took on the Tigers of Suffield Academy under the bright lights and walkway of the New Gym on a Friday afternoon. Black and Gold came out picking up where they left off with quick ball movement and team offense surmounting an early lead against Suffield. Hugh Olson ‘25 and Finn Williams ‘26 pocketed early three-pointers causing the Tigers to switch to man-to-man defense for the remainder of the game. Aidan Walsh ‘24 and Draven Chung ‘26 added free throws from their interior presence. The Martlets stalled offensively near the end of the first half as the Tigers found rhythm from the perimeter taking a lead into the half. As the team has throughout the season, the Martlets came out of the locker room ready to compete with some Grit in the second half. Rhys Marschke ‘24 collected two hundred dollars from the bank but did not pass go on a three-pointer at the top of the key. Marschke had a season high two three-pointers for his six points on the day while channeling his inner Jimmy Butler leadership in intensity, communication, and passing. Finn Williams ‘26 added a key block, Liam Murray ‘26 secured some boards from the glass while adding two points, and Ethan Hernandez ‘27 forced steals with his perimeter defense as the Martlets chipped away at the lead. In a series straight out of Hoosiers, Hugh Olson ‘25 scored two on the interior on a dime from Marschke and then forced the steal on the next possession, driving to the rim cutting the lead to six as the Martlets built momentum. Finn Cathey ‘26 added perimeter defense on the press and Alexei Kocatas ‘25 injected a free-throw to his consistent defensive effort. The Martlets ran out of asphalt on the driveway as time faded away and the Tigers secured a win led by their first half run. With little time to turn the page, Black and Gold are headed to Washington to take on the Highlanders of Frederick Gunn School tomorrow afternoon.
