Martlets Fall to Salisbury

The Thirds team took the ice this afternoon against Salisbury School—a tough test any time, but even more so given the Martlets last played before the holidays. The first period was a back and forth affair with Westminster opening the scoring just 48 seconds into the game. Following a face-off win at center ice and a beautiful stretch pass, Zac Jainchill ‘25 found himself in on goal with just one defender to beat. Jainchill, elected to snap off a wrist shot from the slot that quickly found the back of the net. Linemates Justin Cardia ‘24 and Benji Hanson ‘27 each assisted on the play. It took Salisbury only 13 seconds to even up the game following a scrum in front of the Martlet net. The Scarlet Knights pulled ahead 2-1 a few minutes later, but Westminster battled right back to tie the game with just over four minutes remaining in the period. Richard Kim ‘25 found Cardia streaking up the right side of the ice with a nice stretch pass. Cardia finished the play with a wrister to the upper left corner of the net. Salisbury pulled ahead for good three minutes later, ending the first period with a 3-2 lead. There was no let up from there as the visitors scored seven unanswered goals over the next two periods. While the final was lopsided, the young Martlets worked hard right to the end. Next up, Taft visits Jackson rink on Wednesday.
