Martlets Defeat Suffield

This was a great day for the Martlets on the courts and not mainly because of the win. There was some of the best squash played so far this season and it was our first away match this season. Since coming back from a long deserved break, the Martlets have been working hard on playing with purpose and intention instead of just reacting. That was the goal of this match and it paid off for all the players. We were able to take the win in 3 at the top four spots of the ladder, those being Sophia Lazor ‘27, Elle Wilson ‘26, Margaret Dilks ‘24 and Emily Fonner ‘26. Sophia Lazor did an amazing job of showing what it means to respectfully beat an opponent you are knowingly better than. The bottom of the ladder had to play up because of a player illness so we knew we had to work harder and that is what the Martlets did. Playing up in the fifth spot, Chase Hager ‘26 played some of the best squash she has ever played by digging deep and using Martlet grit to pull off a tight win in five games after sustaining a small injury after the first game that she was able to play through. Chase won by resorting to simple clean cut squash and technique that she has been working on since coming back from break. The entire team was so proud of the way she fought back! Natasha Johnson ‘27 was down after the first game but after taking a step back and using the first game to feel out her opponent, she was able to strategize better to win in 4 games. Meiyin Ren ‘25 had a tough and pretty well matched opponent who was able to take the win in the fifth game by only two points. Meinyin played some of her best squash this match even though she didn’t win she came off court in between each game knowing what she was doing well and what she needed to change to give her the upperhand. Her opponent just had the edge in the end. Lastly, Nora Davis ‘24 was able to win her exhibition match in 4 games with great drives to the back to her opponent’s weaker side. Overall, it was a great day of squash played by the Martlets. We have our first home match of the year against KO on Saturday, Go Martlets!!
