Martlets Fall to DA

While the game was not played in Helm’s Deep, a shorthanded Martlet team took on the Twin Towers of Deerfield. The formidable size of the Big Green front line made open shots sparse for the Martlets in the first half. Will Whiting ‘24 made two-three pointers and Rhys Marschke 24’ converted some clutch baskets before heading into the locker room. When the Martlets made some tactical adjustments to open up the floor, Finn Cathey ‘26 converted a corner three-pointer and Ethan Hernandez ‘27 knocked down another three to inject some momentum out of the half. Michael Basich ‘26 made his first start with some tenacious rebounding against a strong front line, earning some trips to the free throw line. Hugh Olson ‘25 executed a perfect backdoor cut as the team fell into a smoother rhythm. The backdoor duo of Max Williams ‘25 and Rhys Marschke ‘24 halted perimeter traffic defensively on Old Main Street, stifling Deerfield in man to man defense. Finn Williams ‘26 contributed important minutes on the glass and a willingness to play both the guard and forward position. As the team watched The Dark Knight on the trip up to Historic Deerfield, officiating was at times inspired by the Joker quote, “The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules.” While missing some teammates due to injury and illness, the Martlets competed, fought through some elbows, phantom calls, and showed resolve. At the end of the day, Deerfield had too many trips to the line and interior points in the paint for the team to find that last run before the game opened up. The Martlets look to earn the status of road warriors in the New Year with rival, The Winged Beaver of Avon Old Farms next on the schedule.
