Martlets Fall to Berkshire

The season-opening matinee for the Third Boys hockey team pitted the Martlets against the Bears from Berkshire. The pregame coaches conversation revealed that both teams are in similar positions to start the year—hit hard by graduation, young netminders behind a solid defense, and a forward crew taking on elevated roles this season. The Bears got the scoring going with two goals in short order about halfway through the period. Not to be denied, the Martlets struck back for two goals of their own in the last two minutes of the first. Ty Lambert ‘26 scored from just beyond the right face-off dot, as the puck found its way through traffic and into the back of the net. Will McCarthy ‘25 scored the equalizer just over a minute later with assists going to Justin Cardia ‘24 and Junian Kim ‘26. Berkshire did all of the second period scoring, re-establishing their two-goal lead. Westminster cut the lead in half with about ten minutes to play on a quick snapshot from Cardia, with the primary assist going to Lorny Goodyear ‘25. Unfortunately, that was the extent of the scoring for the Martlets this afternoon, as Berkshire tallied the final three goals of the contest. Despite the final score, the young Martlets showed many positives. Tyler Ungerman ‘26, Jeffrey Niu ‘26, and Auggie Jiranek ‘27 played solid all-around defense in front of rookie goaltender, Danny Maher ‘26. Additional presence on offense was provided by Jack Pickett ‘26 and Henry Baird ‘26. The Martlets will have all they can handle when they welcome Rumsey Hall to Jackson rink on Wednesday.
