Basketball - First Boys'
Dec. 1: Basketball - First Boys’ 55 vs. Kingswood-Oxford School 67
In front of a packed gym, the Martlets came up short against a stingy KO team. It was a back and forth game from the tip off. Kingswood had several players who hit big time shots throughout the game. For the Martlets, Joel Pullen '20 led the Martlets in scoring with 20 points and seven assists. Captain Chris Robinson ’20 scored 15 points for the Martlets.

Basketball - Second Boys'
Nov. 30: Basketball - Second Boys’ 37 vs. Eaglebrook School 62
Second Boys' Basketball opened its 2018-19 season against an experienced, athletic team from Eaglebrook. The first few minutes of the game see-sawed back and forth until the Eagles pulled away with an aggressive three-quarter trap, as well as a potent inside-out game in their half-court sets, ultimately building a 20-point lead heading into halftime. The Martlets took better care of the ball in the second half but just couldn't find the net from outside. Despite the latter, they moved the ball well during the last 10 minutes of the game, creating their scoring opportunities with their dribble penetration. Lukas Dudzik '19 put together a string of steals and layups as he, Cooper Kistler '22 and Raymond Liu '22 worked well off of each other. Dudzik led the Martlets' overall scoring. Will Lynch '20 and Kevin Kuang '19 played strong, aggressive ball in the frontcourt.

Dec. 1: Basketball - Second Boys’ 31 vs. Kingswood-Oxford School 42
In its second game in as many days, Second Boys' Basketball lost to a formidable Kingswood Oxford team. The Martlets trailed 11-0 to open the game as the Wyverns hit some early three-pointers; however, Westminster's refocused, defensive effort allowed it to chip away at the visitor's lead, eventually coming within four points in the second half. Despite those opening minutes, the game was rather evenly matched. Teddy Schellbach '20 pulled eight rebounds while Eddie Lie-A-Cheong '19 led all scorers with 13 points for the home team, which was still plagued with too many unforced turnovers.

Basketball - Third Boys'
Dec. 1: Basketball - Third Boys’ 25 vs. Eaglebrook School 30
The Martlets flew north to hunt down the Eagles soaring above Deerfield, Massachusetts on Dec. 1, feetless talons eager to sink into their Eaglebrook contenders. Hunter “Blonde Elvis” Hoogkamp ‘21 took the lead on the court, commanding the offense and moving the ball with ease right out of the gate. Fresh off the soccer field, sophomore Lucas “Premier League” Wahlberg ‘21 made healthy use of both his size and speed in the first half to set a towering stage for the Third Boys’ Basketball defense, an impressive performance for his first steps on the court. Flying high above the Eagles, the Martlets lay in wait, studying the opposing offense as the first half ended with Eaglebrook leading 20-9. Crashing down like a band of hail in the summer, Westminster froze its defensive position and held Eaglebrook to just a single basket in the first six minutes of the second half as Hoogkamp and Ben “Quad Squad Prince” Mihailovich ‘22 closed the gap while Baker “The Chef” Morton ‘22 cooked up a fresh batch of defensive vigor. With just minutes remaining, the Martlets were within three points of victory, 28-25. Though a last minute jump shot ended the game with the Eagles on top, it was clear that the future is bright for the Martlets.

Hockey - First Girls'
Nov. 28: Hockey - First Girls’ 5 vs. St. Mark's School 2
First Girls' Hockey had a strong start against the tough St. Mark's team. The beginning of the first period was even as both teams worked to set the tempo. Westminster at times was more reactionary than aggressive, and St. Mark's capitalized by putting the first goal up at the 12-minute mark. Sure enough, the Martlets used this as a wake-up call and through the leadership of Sixth Form captains Jill Parsons and Hannah Carbone, the team took to the ice with more discipline. Just three minutes later, Taylor Adams '20 capitalized on a back door play to even the score. With the momentum on its side, Westminster turned up the tempo of play and executed the forecheck flawlessly. To finish the period, Casey Winslow '21 found the back of the net on a pass from Nina Ausperger '19 giving the Martlets the lead at the break. With first game jitters out of the way, the team hit its stride in the second period. Abby Munger '20 scored an outstanding goal that feed the energy of the team. Just one minute later, Adams struck again off a pass from Parsons and Munger. The team continued its roll as Parsons scored a perfectly placed goal off an assist from Munger. The third period brought more even play, yet goaltender Mandy Busky '21 was ready to make up for late game errors.

Dec. 1: Hockey - First Girls’ 1 vs. Hill School 3
Westminster faced a talented Hill team Dec. 1 in Jackson arena. The first period was fast-paced as the Martlets were put on their heels and struggled to meet the tempo. Hill struck first 10 minutes in, but Westminster managed to catch the momentum to end the period. The Martlets took to the ice for the second with a renewed focus at the task at hand. It was back to basics as the team worked to get it deep and get the forecheck going. At the 12-minute mark, Westminster maintained the pressure and Hailey Tullo '22 found the back of the net off a pass from Margaret Sadak '22 and Nina Ausperger '19. Goaltender Mandy Busky '21 played strong to the buzzer, giving her team a chance to get back in it. With the score tied 1-1 heading into the third; the first few minutes were fast and furious. Westminster took some tough penalties giving Hill the edge as it scored the game winner at 12 minutes. Westminster tried to answer back by hitting two posts, but could not even the score. Hill struck again at eight minutes, and the Martlets worked hard to get back in. Hill played it smart and the clock ran out.

Hockey - First Boys'
Nov. 30: Hockey - First Boys’ 2 vs. Northfield Mount Hermon School 3
Back at it for another season, Westminster opened 2018-2019 against a stalwart NMH team that was fast and physical. The Martlets played hard, putting their speed to work early, and were able to capitalize midway through the first period. Sean Clarke ‘19 scored from the goalie’s left side after getting control of a loose puck. The rest of the first period was even, though Westminster had a few more quality opportunities. They simply were unable to find the proper space and timing. NMH did not fall away, and continued to get pucks deep and create odd-man situations off turnovers. NMH would even the score midway through the second period, and then they took advantage of a power play, sending Westminster to the locker room down 2-1 heading into the third period. The Martlets battled through most of the third period down 2-1. NMH continued to play a simple game, keeping Westminster away from the net and preventing high quality chances. With under five minutes to play, NMH took a penalty and Westminster took advantage. Will Gilson ‘20 found Jordie McKenna ‘19 and was able to get him the puck through traffic. The Martlets were able to climb back into the game, but with only two minutes left, NMH was able to bang a bouncing puck behind Ian Shane ‘20 for the win. Shane had a great game, keeping the score close by turning away some high-quality opportunities down the stretch.

Hockey - Second Girls'
Dec. 1: Hockey - Second Girls’ 1 vs. Hartford Jr. Wolfpack 8
Westminster opened its season against a feisty and determined Hartford Wolfpack. Natalie Rubin '19 scored just three minutes into the half on an excellent individual effort and backhand finish. Julia Krys ‘19 who played outstanding in net, saving 27 of the 35 shots she faced, led the Martlets. Along with Krys, an experienced defense unit, made up of Greta Baker '19, Blake Cote '19, Layla Ennis '19, Caroline McDermott '20 and Susie Renehan '19, challenged the Wolfpack's talented attacking efforts. A great team effort against a skilled team.

Hockey - Second Boys'
Nov. 30: Hockey - Second Boys’ 4 vs. Eaglebrook School 1
After two days of tryouts and only one day of practice, Second Boys’ Ice Hockey welcomed a speedy and talented Eagles team on a Friday night at Jackson Rink. Despite some understandable first period nerves and a bit of undisciplined play, the Martlets emerged from the period with a 0-0 tie behind the solid goaltending of Will Scott '20. The second period was a different story as the team played with better structure and commitment in all three zones. Aidan Petrie '20 opened the scoring when he converted a turnover in the Eaglebrook high slot into the Martlets' first goal of the year. Two more goals followed in quick succession: Peyton Knauf '19 took a pass from Alex Tonioni '22 at the left point and fired it past the Eaglebrook keeper. Xander Cardia '21 also assisted on the play. Only a few minutes later, Ben Michaud '22 plucked a loose puck off the wall, took a couple of quick steps into the middle of the ice and put a low, hard shot into the Eaglebrook net. The period ended with Westminster up 3-0 and playing well, as Ben Ferrell '21 made several good saves. The third period reminded the team of its early season conditioning — or lack thereof — and while a fourth goal from Ryan Huntley '21 on a breakaway pass from Nate Stevens '21 put the team up 4-0, tired legs were evident. The team conceded a goal to Eaglebrook midway through the third as the team failed to clear the puck from in front of Jack Schroeder '22 and the Eagles had three or four chances before knocking it home. The last several minutes were tightly played, but the score remained 4-1 in favor of the home side.

Hockey - Second Boys'
Dec. 1: Hockey - Second Boys’ 3 vs. Cardigan Mountain School 2
Playing their second game in 24 hours against a talented Cardigan Mountain team, Second Boys’ Hockey rallied from a 0-1 deficit to score three unanswered goals in the final two periods before yielding a goal late in the game. With the goalie pulled in the waning seconds, the Martlets unnecessarily iced the puck (committing the cardinal hockey sin of trying to score on the open net from 200 feet away) and gave the Cougars one last chance — which they took advantage of and scored to make it 3-2 with four seconds to go. That was too bad for Jack Schroeder '22, who played a very strong game in net and turned aside 24 Cardigan shots. Cardigan scored first in the opening frame, banging away on a loose puck in front of the net on the power play. In the second period, Westminster got on the board when Aidan Petrie '20 turned a hardworking forechecking effort with line mate Ryan Huntley '21 — who assisted on the play — into a near-post goal. A bit later in the period, Huntley got on the board himself on the power play after a neat combination of passes with Petrie and right-winger Alec Paro '19. The Seconds continued to press, and despite some breakdowns in the defensive structure (the team's had one practice, after all), managed to make key clearing plays when necessary. In the third period, Alex Tonioni '22 completed the Martlet scoring with a quick wrist shot from the point off a terrific pass from Jack Murdock '19, who had collected the puck from Hunter Johnson '21. Productive contributions from Rex Flinn '21 and Wes Oltsch '20 on the blue line — Nate Stevens '21 and Ben Michaud '22 also played well in Westminster’s end.

Hockey - Third Boys'
Dec. 1: Hockey - Third Boys’ 2 vs. Berkshire School 5
Rolling into the first game of the season with a short bench, Third Boys’ Hockey showed earnest grit, but ultimately came up short against a physical Berkshire team. Despite the best efforts of goalie Rich Mugler ’22 and a Martlet defense anchored by Beck Winsor ’21, Grant Pietri ’22, Owen Murphy ’22 and Justin Parsons ’20, Berkshire was able to pull ahead late in the first with a couple of fortunate bounces. The Martlets, however, did not let up, and after a back and forth second period, Nic Swahn ’22 found the back of the net off a beautiful entry play by Spencer Kwan ’22. After two more Berkshire power play goals late in the second, Pietri found the net on a shot from the point for one of his own midway through the third period. Mugler and Will Scott ’20 were solid in net throughout.

Squash - First Girls'
Dec. 1: Squash - First Girls’ 3 vs. Loomis Chaffee 4
For the fourth time in as many years, these two teams opened their seasons with a 4-3 match score (each winning twice). This year the Pelicans came out on top in dramatic fashion. The hosts had the advantage at the top of the ladder, winning at each of the top three spots, although not without a good fight. Kaylee Hunt '20 faced a very strong No. 1, and showed good fight and encouraging persistence in her first match for the Martlets (4, 2, 8). With No. 2 Valeria Osorio '19 out for the day, Ellie Bailey '21 played up a spot (as would everyone else) and raised her game, taking the first game before falling in four. At No. 3, Natalie Fay ’19 played a bunch of long rallies, but could not break through, losing three close games (6, 10, 9). The Martlets took the next three spots in even tighter matches. Captain Caroline Kelter '19 dropped her first and fourth games, but she turned a close match into a runaway as she took her last game at love at No. 4. Rebecca Sargent '20 (6, (8), 9, 1) and Annabel Bradley '19 (6, (9), 9, 2) played nearly identical matches at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, eventually dominating with their length. Eve Cathcart ‘20 at No. 7 played the final match on court. She took a 2-0 lead in games but could not quite close out her opponent, dropping the last three games at 10, 9 and 11, the last of which included one match ball earned and another one fought off. Fittingly, for a match with a razor thin margin, the exhibition match also went to five games, with Georgia Swank '19 prevailing 9, (6), 4, (6), 5.

Squash - First Boys'
Dec. 1: Squash - First Boys’ 7 vs. Salisbury School 0
The Martlets opened the 2018-2019 season Dec. 1 with a 7-0 home victory against Salisbury. Every match was 3-0. The Salisbury No. 2 and No. 5 made strong bids to win games with the No. 2 having numerous game points in the third game against co-captain Khalil Walker '19. Walker finally prevailed in that game 17-15. The Salisbury No. 5 made a similar bid for a game against another co-captain, Nate Swift '19, before falling 11-13. Third Formers Sean Gregg at No. 3 and Alex Unruh at No. 1 earned their first W for the black and gold with solid performances. Unruh's opponent had very quick hands and was a pesky retriever, but Unruh was more pesky retrieving balls and controlled the match with better width and length. Gregg battled through a lot of lets, but also kept control. Sam Pagon '21 and Scott Lee '20 got wins, Lee's match being exhibition.

Squash - Second Girls'
Dec. 1: Squash - Second Girls’ 7 vs Loomis Chaffee 0
Dec. 1: Squash - Second Girls’ 1 vs Taft School 6
The Second Girls' squad opened the season with a dual match with Taft and Loomis in Watertown. The match was an abbreviated best of three format, and the team returned to competitive form to open the 2018-2019-winter season. In what felt more like a scrimmage, the Martlets dropped the opener to Taft 6-1 while Westminster swept the Pelicans in the second match, 7-0.

Squash - Second Boys'
Dec. 1: Squash - Second Boys’ 3 vs. Suffield Academy 4
The Martlets faced Suffield Academy to open their 2018-2019 season losing 3-4 in a hotly contested match. In fact, the overall match was tied at three apiece with only one individual match still being played, the No. 3 match which saw the two feisty opponents trading games, until at the very end Gus Hartmann '20 narrowly missed a drop shot to lose 9-11 in the fifth and decisive game. Four of the individual matches went to five games with Suffield winning two of them and Westminster winning two. The teams also split two four-game matches. It doesn't get any tighter than this. The Martlets won three of the top four matches, but lost all three of the bottom matches. Coach Michael Cervas was pleased with the effort and never-say-die attitude of the boys and expects the team to make good progress as the season goes along.

Squash - Third Boys'
Dec. 1: Squash - Third Boys’ 0 vs. Eaglebrook School 14
The Martlets, some of whom were playing their first squash match ever, played tough but were simply outmatched. Jeremy Hopsicker '22 and Jonah Prentiss '22 each won the first game against their respective opponents, but could not sustain the momentum. After losing his first game, Connor Eddy '21 battled back to tie up the match at one apiece, only to drop the next two games. Will Mell '21, Peter Barrett '22 and Max Hong '22 played gritty squash to keep each game of their matches close. Special mention goes out to Hong for stepping up and playing a second match when Will Warner '22 was unable to continue due to an injury early on in his match. Grand Tantichot '22 and Matthew Westlake '22 lost a few close games where a few points going the other way could have easily changed the outcome.

Swimming/Diving - First Girls'
Dec. 1: Swimming/Diving - First Girls’ 86  vs. St. George's School 77
It was a great start to the season for the Westminster girls, who traveled to Newport and came away with an exciting win in a true team effort, 86-77. Co-captain Alex Lin ‘19 led the way with wins in the 100 and 200 freestyle races, and she teamed up with Angelesia Ma ‘20, Dorka Nagy ‘19 and co-captain Alex Wolf ‘19 in the 200 freestyle relay. The Westminster team of Annie Brewer ‘21, India Lalor ‘21, Simonne Ponce ‘21 and Sydney Schuster ‘21 took second in that race, which put the meet in hand with three events remaining. Katherine Ashe ‘21 finished second in both the 200 IM and the 100 fly, and newcomer Campbell Swift ‘21 took second in the 100 backstroke. Wolf was second in the 50 free, Schuster finished runner up in the 500 free, and Ma took second in the 100 breaststroke. Sophia Coumantaros ‘21 swam a great race in the 100 fly to take third, and she was third in the 100 back as well. The Martlets depth was the key to the win.

Swimming/Diving - First Boys'
Dec. 1: Swimming/Diving - First Boys’ 93 vs. St. George's School 77
The Martlets made the long drive to Newport Dec. 1 to face off against St. George’s, last year’s New England runners up, and stunned the Dragons in an exciting meet full of close races. Max Larock ‘22 made his debut in the black and gold, winning the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke and anchoring the winning 400 freestyle relay team with teammates Hudson Stedman ‘21, co-captain Emmett de Kanter ‘19 and co-captain Matt Norris ‘19. Jason Shi ‘21 stepped up with a win in the 50 free in his first individual race as a Martlet, with compadre Layton Harmon ‘21, finishing second. Harmon went on to win the 100 freestyle with his best time ever, with de Kanter second. Norris won the 100 fly and the 500 freestyle, both with fast times. Liam Seeley ‘20 and Grant McCargo ‘21 also posted fast times in the 50 free. It was a fast start to the season and the first win versus St. George’s since 2012.
