    2018 - 2019
    Head Coach: Mark de Kanter

The Westminster Cross-Country program has a long tradition of hard work, camaraderie and success, dating back to the start of the program under Richard Miller in 1972. During the 10-week season, the athletes invariably improve substantially in their aerobic capacity and strength, as demonstrated by their times at nine meets, six of which have invitational or championship formats. Most importantly for the coaches, however, is that cross-country athletes gain an appreciation for the sport, bolster self-confidence by overcoming physical challenges, and develop friendships that last throughout their Westminster careers and beyond.

The team trains on weekdays on Westminster’s beautiful campus and in surrounding parks, with almost all runs occurring on trail. The team mixes in regular plyometrics, pool workouts, yoga and weight training to complement the run training and to help develop general athleticism. This fall, the team hosts the 13th annual Richard Miller Invitational meet on Sept. 29, an event that brings 11 other schools to the campus annually to run Westminster’s challenging and spectator-friendly course. Westminster hosted the New England Division II championship meet in 2015, which the school previously hosted in 1995 and in 2006.

This season, the Martlet squad will be adding new athletes to a dedicated returning group of runners, led by co-captains Emmett de Kanter ’19, Elliott Kennard ’19 and Justin Schuster ’19. After a solid summer of training, these harriers will be posting fast times right out of the gates; come out and watch the black and gold compete this fall.
