Beginning fall of 2018
Westminster is excited to add boys’ water polo in the fall of 2018. The addition of this sport was part of the vision of Hibbard Aquatic Center when it was constructed in 2003. Water polo will build upon the tradition of aquatic excellence on the “Hill.” Hibbard pool is the home of the swimming and diving team in the winter, and will be home for water polo players this fall. With its elevated viewing area for fans and its wide-open windows letting in natural light, this will be the perfect venue for Martlets to compete and develop a tradition of water polo success.
The water polo team competes against many of the traditional water polo strongholds in New England in addition to teams from outside the league. The NEPSAC (New England Preparatory Athletic Council) league includes teams from Exeter, Andover, Suffield, Loomis, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Choate, Brunswick, Williston and Hopkins. Matches will be either single game or will be scheduled as mini-tournaments involving three teams competing at a host school’s pool. The championship tournament, known as The Liquid Four, takes place at the end of the fall athletic season in November.
Westminster’s team is made up of experienced swimmers who are learning water polo or who have a few years of team experience. The team is open to all interested athletes, and many players are new to the sport when they arrive at Westminster. Practices are tailored towards developing individual fundamental skills and broader team concepts. Water polo suits students who model the Grit & Grace motto through perseverance and dedication to their own improvement and learning as well as the team’s.
