Putting on a Musical

A-men Rasheed, Director of Theater & Dramat Productions

Putting on a musical is an incredible endeavor. There are so many moving parts between intricate set design and construction, learning complicated and varying music parts, working tirelessly on the dance routines, and blocking and learning lines. It’s a whole lot. But wait, there’s more: sound design, lighting design, live mixing 15-20 mics during production, and a live run crew that sets and strikes each scene. In the final week before opening, we get the performers ready to experience a shift in music from a solitary piano to a full orchestra! Our students receive as much professional experience as we can give them, and they always rise to the occasion.

Participation remains strong in Dramat, and we are fortunate to attract new faces and retain our veterans. Tech week is my favorite week of production because it’s the time when I get to see the fruits of all of our labors come together. Our shows run like a well-oiled machine due in part to everyone’s ability to work together and have fun while doing it. After all, that is the number one goal. When we are having fun, it doesn’t feel like work, even though just about everyone is putting in hundreds of hours to make it happen. Directing plays is hard, but, depending on the show, it is not as intricate as directing a musical. I value and appreciate the full team effort that comes with putting on a musical. It’s a bigger rush of endorphins when it is accomplished!
