Richter Uzur Duo Entertains Students and Faculty

The Richter Uzur Duo visited Westminster March 29 to give a performance of its whimsical mashed-up blend of classical, world and rock music for students and faculty. The duo features internationally recognized guitarist Brad Richter and cellist Viktor Uzur. This was Brad’s fifth visit to Westminster and Viktor’s fourth.

Viktor and Brad are both master musicians with global solo careers, major international awards and intensive training from two of the world’s most lauded musical institutions (The Moscow Conservatory and The Royal College of Music respectively). Together, they have composed and arranged an expansive collection of music for cello and guitar.

The duo was founded in 2005 and has played hundreds of concerts in North America, South America, Europe and Asia, and appears regularly in broadcasts on NPR’s “Performance Today,” as well as the Armed Forces Radio Network and PBS programs.

Following their Westminster performance, Viktor and Brad took questions from the audience. Brad explained how they amplify their instruments while creating an allusion of no amplification. He also described how he makes percussive sounds on the guitar. “One of my favorite things to do is figure out how to do it,” he explained. Viktor shared that his cello is an 1870 Venetian instrument for which he searched for years. He added that the bow is old, too, and French. Brad’s guitar is made of Brazilian rosewood and was built in 1997. He explained how guitars do not last as long as cellos. When asked why they chose to combine the two instruments, Viktor replied, “It is more about how we collaborate, and it is fortunate we both play tenor instruments. I think they work well.”
