Basketball - First Girls'
Feb. 8: Basketball - First Girls’ 35 vs Hopkins School 50
Despite Emma Alpaugh ’18 and Paige Phillips ’20 having combined points of 26, Westminster allowed Hopkins' best player to score too easily. The team rebounded poorly and missed too many open shots on offense.

Feb. 10: Basketball - First Girls’ 47 vs Berkshire School 70
The team was down 35-22 at half against a solid Berkshire team. A 12-0 run after halftime put the game out of reach. Too many turnovers and offensive rebounds were allowed by Westminster. Paige Phillips ’20 led the way with a career high of 23 points.

Basketball - First Boys'
Feb. 9: Basketball - First Boys’ 68 vs Suffield Academy 78
The Martlets played one of their best games of the season against a tough Suffield team. The Martlets played a strong first half and was only down 31-34. Suffield then went on a run in the second half and they took a 15-point lead. However, the Martlets battled back and got the game within six with several minutes left in the game. Chris Robinson '20 led all scorers with 30 points and 10 assists. Fritz Gale '18 also added 17 points with eight rebounds. Third Former Tavian Montanez ’21 had his best game by scoring 14 points. Last, Max Brigham '18 ended the game with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Feb. 10: Basketball - First Boys’ 62 vs Gunnery School 71
The Martlets started the game slow and Gunnery jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead. After a few runs by both teams, the Martlets found themselves only down by several points going into the half. Down the stretch, the Gunnery team hit big shots, while converting on most of its free throws. The Martlets battled to the end but they didn't have enough to overcome the Gunnery lead. Chris Robinson '20 led all scorers with 27 points, while Fritz Gale '18 scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half. Third Former Tavian Montanez had back-to-back double digit scoring games for the Martlets, scoring 12 points.

Basketball - Second Girls'
Feb. 10: Basketball - Second Girls' 26 vs Canterbury School 21
The team faced Canterbury on Feb. 10 and got off to a strong start, scoring 16 points in the first half to Canterbury's eight. The team generated a strong offensive effort and was able to force a lot of Canterbury turnovers. However, the girls seemed to have used most of their energy in the first half. Westminster struggled significantly on offense in the second half, scoring 10 points to Canterbury's 13. Though it was enough to hold on for the win, the team looks ahead to a stronger, 32-minute performance. Sophia Gasser '18 led the team with 14 points and several defensive steals, while Becca Gavel '18 added eight for the team.

Basketball - Second Boys'
Feb. 9: Basketball - Second Boys’ 22 vs Suffield Academy 38
The Martlets battled a talented team of Tigers from Suffield Academy on a cold and snowy Feb. 9. While the defense was strong, the offense was left out in the cold. The Martlets shot under 15 percent for the game. The lone highlight was the return of Edward Lie-A-Cheong '19 from a serious finger injury. Lie-A-Cheong hit two three-pointers and a fee throw in his first game since the beginning of the season.

Feb. 10: Basketball - Second Boys’ 38 vs Gunnery School 24
Westminster and Gunnery played an even game on Feb. 10. In the end, the Martlet defense forced turnovers and Westminster was able to pull away and finish off Gunnery. Each player contributed to the victory. Lukas Dudzik '19 led the way with nine points. Riley Wood '19 was once again the most valuable Martlet. Wood controlled the tempo, scored, assisted and rebounded. Alex Biedron '18 also played tremendous defense in the second half. Biedron, Wood and Edward Lie-A-Cheong '19 were the catalysts of a 10-0 run that allowed the Martlets to pull away.

Basketball - Third Boys'
Feb. 10: Basketball - Third Boys’ 36 vs Taft School 59
As what felt like an early spring rain pelted northern Connecticut, the Martlets flew south to take on the rhinos of the Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut. Unperturbed by the recently flooded court lying just feet away, the White Lightning came out strong in the first half, delivering multiple consecutive threes at the beginning of the contest, but unfortunately succumbing to the lockdown defense of the Taft thirds team into the half. Commendable effort was shown by Phalla Phoap '20 and Max Brownback '21, proudly giving their all on the court. The game was late and the final score spelled a loss for the Martlets, but the journey through the season has proven just how much improvement can be made with consistent effort for the boys of the Westminster Thirds Basketball team.

Hockey - First Girls'
Feb. 8: Hockey - First Girls’ 0 vs Deerfield Academy 3
First Girls' Hockey had a tough one Feb. 8 against Deerfield Academy. Deerfield came to play and dominated the first period outshooting the Martlets 11-3 in the first 10 minutes. They capitalized on two, putting Westminster on its heels in the final minutes. After drawing a penalty, Westminster put on the pressure closing the gap in shots to just one. Still, the Deerfield goalie was solid and the teams broke for the second period at 2-0. The second period play belonged to Westminster. The girls brought the tempo and looked to shoot early and often. Despite the efforts, Westminster couldn't bury one to get on the board. Deerfield converted on a pretty back door play and the teams ended the period at 3-0. Westminster struggled to find the tempo and connect on passes in the third, but the girls continue to work hard. The team couldn't get the “lucky” bounce and in the end dropped the game to Deerfield, 3-0.

Feb. 10: Hockey - First Girls’ 0 vs Noble and Greenough 2
First Girls' Hockey played one of its strongest games of the season against a very talented Noble in Jackson rink on Feb. 10. Westminster was flying from the first drop of the puck. Forwards Lilly Holmes '18 and Rosy Sieglaff '18 helped set the tone as they stripped Noble's defenseman of the puck behind the net. Goalie Hannah Stone '18 was confident and composed as she controlled ever shot by freezing the puck or putting the rebound in the corner. After two periods, the teams remained at a stalemate 0-0. The pace started to pick up late in the third as both teams tried to break the time and steal the win. Noble capitalized at the two-minute-mark on a quick turn over in the neutral zone and fired a shot over Stone's shoulder to go up 1-0. Westminster was rattled and struggled to gain composure as the Noble struck again just 17 seconds later. The Martlets did eventually find their tempo again and pressured the puck in the Noble end for the final minute. It was an incredible effort and demonstrated just how fast this game came be.

Hockey - First Boys'
Feb. 9: Hockey - First Boys’ 1 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 4
The Martlets were a little slow out of the gate following the long winter weekend break. Despite scoring first, Westminster misfired all over the ice. Missed passes, poor reads and a lack of structure defined this game. Choate capitalized on the Martlet mistakes and quickly took the game away. Iggy Belov ‘20 scored the lone Westminster goal in the first period. Despite outshooting Choate 41-20, the game ended 4-1, and the Martlets dropped another couple of points in their quest to make the top tournament.

Feb. 10: Hockey - First Boys’ 2 vs Pomfret School 2
Despite being 0-0 for most of two periods, and then the Martlets being down 1-0, Westminster dominated the game in every zone. Offensive zone time was heavily lopsided, and the Martlets had a multitude of excellent opportunities, yet were unable to bury the puck. Ryan Doolin ‘18 scored in the third period to even the game, and Will Gilson ‘20 would give the Martlets the lead later in that period. Pomfret pulled their goalie and scored with :30 on the clock to make the game 2-2. Another hot goaltender for the opposition was the name of the game again for the Martlets. Westminster more than doubled the shot total of Pomfret, approaching 50. Ian Shane ‘20 was solid again in net.

Hockey - Second Boys'
Feb. 10: Hockey - Second Boys’ 3 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 2
Second Boys’ Hockey hosted the Wild Boars of Choate in a season rematch. Much like the first contest, this one came down to the final seconds, and again the Martlets prevailed by one goal, winning 3-2. Choate took advantage of a slow Westminster start and claimed the lead with a shot from just inside the blueline. Late in the first period, Steve Bray '18 tied the game by slamming home a Peter Sanger '21 rebound. Midway through the second period, Bray scored again by getting a step on the Choate defender and snapping a shot top corner for a 2-1 lead. During the final frame, the visitors tied the game by jumping on a loose puck in the Martlet crease. Close games have not ended well for the Seconds this year; however, Westminster would not be denied on this day, and its hard work paid off when blueliner Zach Papapetros '20 got a shot on net and Demitri George '18 was there to bang in the rebound with one minute remaining. The Martlets survived the final minute and earned a hard-fought 3-2 win. Ben Ferrell '21 made 18 saves on the day while the Choate netminder turn aside 29 Martlet shots. This was a solid performance by the hosts in all zones and particularly pleasing to close out a tight game and claim victory.

Squash - First Girls'
Feb. 10: Squash - First Girls’ 7 vs Westover School 0
Feb. 10: Squash - First Girls’ 6 vs Pomfret School 1
The girls picked up two wins, using their superior depth and experience to prevail 7-0 over Westover and 6-1 versus Pomfret. The bottom of the ladder was dominant, as Katie Kosior '18 (#4), Caroline Miller '18 (#5), Natalie Fay '19 (#6) and Lucy Noel '18 (#7) each won both of their matches 3-0. Valeria Osorio '19 (#1) and Ellie Bailey '21 (#2) both also won twice, although Osorio dropped her first game against Westover and Bailey dropped one against Pomfret. Caroline Kelter '19 (#3) collected a win against Westover, but lost three tight games against a girl who played #2 for Pomfret last year.

Squash - First Boys'
Feb. 9: Squash - First Boys’ 5 vs Williston Northampton School 2
A relaxed and determined Williston team arrived Feb. 9 to make up the match rescheduled from earlier in the week. The Martlets began with two first game wins at #2 and #4, while losing 11-13 at #6. Then things got more interesting as Williston won the second game at #2 and #6. At #4 Connor Seeley '18 went to five games before winning. So at one point it seemed as if Williston might take a 3-0 lead. Chanler Miller '18 was up 2-1, 8-3 before it was 8-8. When Miller pulled that game out, it was 2-1 Westminster, a much more favorable score for the black and gold than 0-3. Williston won at #7 to make it 2-2. Aly Tolba '18 and Sean Ryan '18 both won in three to seal the victory before Andrew Doucette '18 won in four to earn the fifth point for Westminster. The boys and coach Peter Doucette were greatly impressed by how hard Williston fought for every point and how team members relished the battle. This was a hard-fought match.

Squash - Second Girls'
Feb. 9: Squash - Second Girls’ 7 vs Suffield Academy 0
The Martlets hosted the Suffield Tigers on Feb. 9 and enjoyed a clean sweep dropping just one game en route to a 7-0 win. Daniela Mays-Sánchez '20 played in her first match since returning from surgery and won 3-0, and Lauren Way '20 played in her first match at the Seconds level and won convincingly 3-0 as well. A solid win for the team after some close losses.

Squash - Third Girls'
Feb. 10: Squash - Third Girls’ 7 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 0

Squash - Third Boys'
Feb. 10: Squash - Third Boys’ 4 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 4
Westminster fared a lot better in the rematch versus Choate, splitting the top eight best-of-five matches, and winning four out of the five best-of-three. Spencer Organ '18 won his match in convincing fashion, sweeping his opponent and only giving up seven points on the last two games. Ral Reyes '20, Nate Chaves '19 and John Clofine '21 played exciting, close matches, each prevailing in four games. Going the limit were Zach Eckerson '21 and Dinh Truong '19, who both lost in five hard-fought, back-and-forth games. William Mell '21 and Carter Henshaw '20 played steady, workman-like squash in defeating their respective opponents, while Cam Jury '19 and James Chun '19 needed an extra game to clinch theirs.
