Baxter Gallery Featuring Paintings by Emily Buchanan

An exhibit of selected paintings by landscape artist Emily Buchanan P’20 will be on display through Oct. 31 in Baxter Gallery in Armour Academic Center.

Born in Beverly Farms, Mass., Emily began painting as a child with her grandmother on the North Shore of Boston. Emily attended Middlesex School and Bates College. She later studied painting at Lyme Academy, The National Academy of Art and with the Boston School painter Paul Ingbretson. Her husband, Brendan O’Connell, is also a painter.

When weather permits, Emily works primarily around her native New England. She paints regularly in Northeast Harbor in Maine, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Squam Lake in New Hampshire and the Adirondacks. In winter, she paints in Palm Beach, Malibu and the Bahamas.

Emily did the painting for the official 2014 White House holiday card, which Architectural Digest called “exquisitely rendered.” Main Street magazine wrote, “She is one of those rare breed of artists who truly speak in a visual language taken directly from life.”

Perhaps the most meaningful accolade about her work came from Quest magazine, which said, “Her paintings bring all of those wonderful places and the emotions that they evoke to those who can’t be there.”

Emily is represented by Mark Murray Fine Paintings in New York City, as well as other galleries on the East Coast, and by the Princess Street Gallery on Harbour Island in the Bahamas. Her work is widely collected in private and corporate collections.

Emily is graciously donating a portion of every sale to Westminster’s Wilde Fund, which supports current students.
