Sept. 16: Field Hockey - First Girls’ 3 vs Ethel Walker School 1
The Martlets came out strong with a superb win over a strong and powerful Ethel Walker. Maggie Kelly ’18 made superb attacking runs into the Ethel Walker half and the forwards worked together to score three well-worked goals through smart and visionary inter-passing. Great Baker '19 scored a superb sweep to open the scoring. Emma Gurnell '21 netted the ball twice with composure and real maturity. A great start to the season.

Sept. 16: Field Hockey - Second Girls’ 3 vs Ethel Walker School 0
The team was eager to play its first scrimmage of the season despite the hot temperature. The team communicated well, kept the ball moving by passing quickly, and worked well together. Goal scorers included Rebecca Sargent '20, Lucy Noel '18 and Sophia Gasser '18. Liz Murphy '19 and Abby Moss '20 both had assists. The team is looking forward to keeping the momentum going.

Sept. 9: Soccer - First Girls’ 1 v Kingswood Oxford 3
Westminster Girls' Soccer hosted Kingswood Oxford for a scrimmage, the first of two prior to league play.  After just two days of practice, the girls took the field ready to implement new tactical strategies they'd learned this week.  The Martlets got on the board 13:51 minutes into the first half thanks to a goal from Taylor Adams '20.  Although KO outshot the Martlets in the first half 6 - 3, the teams broke for half with Westminster leading 1-0.  An all-out effort in the first half allowed for KO to take advantage of some tired legs, getting on the board with two back-to-back goals within the first 20 minutes.  Westminster had some key opportunities late in the game to try and tie it up, but with 4:40 left, KO solidified their win with shot from outside the box.

Sept. 16: Soccer - First Girls’ 3 vs Northfield Mount Hermon School 2
First Girls' Soccer opened its season on Sept. 16 with a win on the home field. The all-out team effort from each player on the Martlet roster was key in the 3-2 win over Northfield Mount Hermon. The Martlets got on the board just 1:30 into the game. A near-post corner kick from Katy Maxon '18 found the instep of Emma Davis '18 who one-timed the ball into the back of the NMH net. Just 10 minutes later, captain Emma Alpaugh '18 cleared the ball out of Westminster's defensive end and found Maxon in the center of the field. Maxon sent the ball to the right corner where Paige Philips '20 was there for the shot and goal. The teams broke for halftime with the Martlets leading 2-0. The strong team effort continued into the second half when Eve Cathcart '20 converted a cross from Philips and sent the ball over the head of the NMH keeper. Cathcart's goal and key defending from the back line and Martlet midfield helped extend Westminster's lead to 3-0. NMH converted a penalty kick and put more pressure on the Martlet defense, narrowing Westminster's lead to just one goal. However, the Martlet defense, led by Alpaugh and goalkeeper Siena Sandridge '19, and the team's all-out effort grittiness all over the field allowed them to maintain the lead, come out on top, and start the season on the right foot.

Sept. 16: Soccer - First Boys’ 5 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 5
This was the last scrimmage of the preseason for Soccer First Boys'. The team was down 3-0 at halftime and battled back to a 5-5 barn burner tie.

Sept. 16: Soccer - Second Girls’ 5 vs Northfield Mount Hermon School 0
The Martlets stormed out of the gates with a 5-0 home win against Northfield. Relentless pressure led to many shots on goal, but it took 16 minutes for the girls to get on the board. Lauren Way '20 struck first, gathering in a cross from Susie Mahoney '20 and beating the keeper on the near side. Mahoney doubled the lead several minutes later, working her way into the box and beating the keeper from close range. In the second half, Kate Lovas '18 would add two goals and Mahoney would notch another en route to the decisive win. The day was encouraging for the quality of the contributions at every position. Maddie Dwyer '18 anchored the defense, Caroline McCausland '20 and Indira Marzbani '18 were very active on the flanks, and Tori Kline'19 and Lizzy McCoy '20 solidified the midfield. The girls will be eager to build upon such a successful opening.

Sept. 16: Soccer - Second Boys’ 3 vs Avon Old Farms School 1
Soccer Second Boys' hosted Avon Old Farms in its first competitive match of the season in an even and fast-paced effort on a hot and humid afternoon. Henry Mitrano '19 scored the first goal for the Martlets on a penalty kick in the 21st minute. AOF answered with a penalty goal of its own six minutes later to even the score. In the 43rd minute, Linc Dines '21 received a pass from Walker Stevens '19 just outside the six yard box, which he chipped into the back of the net to put the Martlets up 2-1. GK Malcolm Kleban '20 made an incredible save at full stretch to deny an AOF breakaway in the closing seconds of the first half. In the 62nd minute, Mitrano laid it off with his heel to Ned Blanchard '20 on the left side of the penalty area. Blanchard swerved in along the end line and played a well-placed pass to SK Lee '18, who tapped it in from the six-yard line. Staunch defending from Zach Tarazi '18, Peter Hall '18, Porter Girty '18 and Alex Biedron '18 held the AOF attack at bay for much of the afternoon, while GK Alex Gadowski '18 played a smart second half in the net. Overall, it was a well-organized effort for the first game of the year.

Sept. 16: Soccer - Third Girls’ 8 vs Northfield Mount Hermon School 4
Soccer Third Girls’ opened up the season with a strong performance in an 8-4 victory in which the team led at the half 6-1. Leading the scoring for the team were Georgia Nolan ’20 and Lizzi Cronin ’21 with several goals apiece. Lily Carrel ’19 and Reese Poe ’19 also chipped in goals. This was a very positive first game for this team, as many new and returning players showed the ability to posses the ball and look for their teammates. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come as the season moves along. A special mention should go out to goalie Annie Brewer ’21 in her first game ever playing the position.

Sept. 16: Soccer - Third Boys’ 2 vs Loomis Chaffee 2
Westminster fought back to draw against a physical Loomis Chaffee team. Two goals from Khalil Walker ’19 and Quinn Armstrong ’20 denied the opponents victory.
