Westminster Softball Caps Undefeated Season with Class A Western New England Title

Westminster’s First Softball team captured the Class A Western New England Championship by defeating Williston Northampton in a close 2-0 contest played before a large home crowd May 21.

Brenna Monroe ’17 pitched a terrific game, striking out eight and allowing only one Williston base hit. Led by the excellent infield play of Gabby Brown ’17, Katie Neilsen ’18, Hannah Stone ’18, Ashlee White ’18 and catcher Emily Samar ’18, the Martlets completed an undefeated 15-0 season.

The victory was the eighth Western New England title for Westminster in the last 10 years. This season, the team also won the Founders League Championship for the ninth time in 11 years. The Martlets have been led by Sixth Formers Brown, Monroe and Mackenzie Griffith ’17, and also benefited from outstanding contributions by Samar behind the plate and White at shortstop.

The New England Championship game was a pitcher’s duel featuring the brilliance of Monroe for Westminster and Jordan Strum for Williston. Westminster jumped out to an early lead when Monroe, Samar and White had consecutive doubles in the first inning. Following this early outburst, strong pitching and excellent fielding by both teams led to six scoreless innings. After yielding a lead off single to the first Wildcat batter in the game, Monroe didn’t allow another hit. Westminster’s play in both the infield and outfield was also exceptional. Samar caught a fantastic game, highlighted by an impressive catch on a towering popup with a runner on base in the third inning. The contest ended as Neilsen fielded a ground ball, completing a 1-2-3 final inning and setting off a celebration for the Martlets.

The previous day, Westminster won a hard-fought 5-2 contest over Taft to advance to the Western New England finals. The game was a scoreless tie until the third inning, when the Martlets sparked a five-run rally with six consecutive hits. Monroe, Samar, White and Gabby Nemarich ’20 each doubled. Brown and Nemarich led the Martlets with two hits apiece during the afternoon. Monroe pitched a strong game, allowing just six Taft singles. Stone and White each made important infield plays to help secure the win.

The Martlets appreciate the outstanding contributions by Sixth Formers Madie Bologa, Gabby Brown, Mackenzie Griffith, Brenna Monroe and Lauren Ferraiuolo. Brown, Griffith and Monroe are four-year First Softball players who have led the team to a record of 63-2 during their time at Westminster.
