May 17: Baseball-First Boys’ 9 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 8
Westminster played its second extra-inning ball game in as many weeks. This time around the Martlets were able to come out on top, defeating Kingswood-Oxford on a walk-off single by Sam Leopold '18 in the bottom of the ninth. The combined pitching efforts of Josh Cosentino '18, Eli Cohen '19 and Will Leathers '17 saw the team through a back and forth struggle in which the lead changed hands four times. In the end, seven different Martlets collected hits. The boys are back at it on May 18 with a home game against The Master's School.

May 15: Golf-First Girls' vs Taft School
Pippy O'Connor Invitational Tournament
Once again, First Girls' Golf participated in the annual Pippy O'Connor Invitational Tournament played this year at Taft's home course in Watertown. This tournament includes most of New England's secondary school golf teams and essentially determines the New England team champion, an honor that went to the Taft Rhinos this year. Eight of Westminster's players competed, six in the nine-hole division and two in the 18-hole division on a day that offered some of the most challenging conditions of the season. From this coach's vantage point, wearing a ski hat and down parka, the overcast day yielded low temperatures, a consistent wind of 30 knots with gusts approach 40 knots. Undeterred, the girls focused in on their respective games, ignored the weather, and found a way to grind out some impressive rounds. Top highlights in the 18-hole division included Susie Mahoney's '20 91 (49,42) putting her in a tie for 16th. Her back nine performance was nearly flawless, as she found her rhythm and posted some good numbers. By the by, the tournament's individual champion from Sacred Heart shot a remarkable 78 seemingly defying the elements. In the nine-hole division captain Abby LeBlanc '17 kept her late season momentum going by carding a nice 49 and demonstrating a solid consistency on the tee, in the fairway, and most importantly on the greens. For a while, her score was the low number in the clubhouse but it was unable to stand the test of time after a 48 and 45 were turned in. She did enjoy being in the top three for that division.

May 17: Golf-First Girls’ 4 vs Miss Porter's School 1
The golf team headed to Tunxis Country Club in Farmington and returned home with a solid a 4-1 victory over a stingy Miss Porter's team. Two of the matches were determined on the ninth hole, and all of the girls on both teams needed to persevere over high temperatures and even higher rough. After every Martlet struggled with her opening tee shot, the team became more focused and started to compete. Highlights for the day included Johanna Hultin's '18 determined outlook and victory at #5, a wonderful achievement following a season long commitment to improving her swing. Katie Kosior '18 #4 played solidly as well closing out her opponent 3/2 and demonstrating a steady consistency all afternoon and a much improved chipping game. Sophia Gasser '18 #6 proved once again that there is no quit in her as she struggled against the elements and her swing in a challenging exhibition match. Annie Hicks’ '17 #3 afternoon ended up being more of a hot afternoon walk after her opponent forfeited after four holes due to an ankle injury. Hicks, however, was solidly in control at that point. Susie Mahoney '20 #1 would fall at the ninth hole against her opponent in what proved to be an exciting match. Mahoney struggled to find her "A" swing as well yet found a way to stay in the fray right until the end. The match with the most drama of the day featured Abby LeBlanc '17 #2 who fell behind her opponent early and then suffered a severe nose bleed that threatened to end the match prematurely. After a 10-minute hiatus and some soul searching, LeBlanc dropped her towel and rushed to the tee and crushed her best drive of the day. As is known in sport, strange but true moments can suddenly turn the course of events in dramatic ways, and somehow LeBlanc's nosebleed did that and more, as she turned tide on her Miss Porter's opponent and seized the match winning 2/1.

May 20: Golf-First Girls’ 2 vs Hotchkiss School 3
With the weather finally providing an afternoon of ideal golf conditions, the Martlets entered their match with the Hotchkiss Bearcats in Lakeville with excitement and confidence based upon their previous week's success. Susie Mahoney '20, hoping to avenge her one down loss from several weeks ago, found her compete level early and battled throughout the afternoon. With her match all even going into the challenging terrain of the ninth hole, she stayed focused and closed out her opponent with an impressive final hole and a key win at the #1 spot. Eve Cathcart '20 #5, who has quietly and persistently developed a wonderful swing during the season, saw all of her efforts coalesce in a decisive match that included a chip in birdie. Going down by one early, Cathcart turned this match and just kept on going, carding a personal best of 45, Westminster's low round for the day. Becca Gavel '18, Annie Hicks '17 and Elaina Comia' 19 all played well in other action but could not prevail at the number 2, 3 and 4 spots respectively. Hicks did share news of her excitement and surprise when one of her 20-foot putts found the cup. Gavel also had a number of great holes, but will have to wait until next year to exorcise the demons of the intimidating ninth hole.

May 20: Lacrosse-Second Girls’ 14 vs Hotchkiss School 9
After a hard week of lacrosse work in mid-90 degree heat, Second Girls’ Lacrosse played a well-balanced and controlled game to defeat the Bearcats of Hotchkiss. The Martlets were ready from the first whistle as Ridgely Green '20 cashed in on a beautiful feed from McKenna Burelle '17 two minutes into the game. Brinley Cuddeback '17 netted the next a minute later, assisted by McKenzie Roller '20. The Martlets continued to press the pace of play, battling the Bearcats' every possession in the midfield, which produced many turnovers for the Martlets as they increased their lead to 8-2 at the half. The Bearcats regrouped at halftime as they put three more goals on the board in the first five minutes but the Martlets quickly reasserted their control burying the next six goals to put the game out of reach. Green won most of the draws and the fine midfield play of Rebecca Sargent '20, Meg Rittenhouse '20, Burelle and Roller allowed the Martlet offense to dictate the play. Strong defensive plays by Jane Ogden '19, Mia Stevens '18, Layla Ennis '19, Natalie Fay '19 and Laura Velez '20 and stellar saves by goalie Nadia Lee '18 stifled many of the Bearcat scoring opportunities. It was a beautiful game to watch as the Martlets played their best complete game of the season.

Lacrosse-Second Boys'
May 17: Lacrosse-Second Boys’ 17 vs Gunnery School 4
For a second game in a row, Westminster won every part of the game against Gunnery. It was obvious from the first whistle that Gunnery would not be able to match the Martlets skill or speed, and the game was quickly dominated by Westminster. The Martlets played hard, and Jake Szykowny ‘17, Cooper Bellet ‘17 and Jeremy Cutler ‘17 played the majority of the game on attack, controlling the tempo and notching points along the way. Transitions were well-executed, and the physical play was excellent throughout.

May 20: Lacrosse-Second Boys’ 15 vs Eaglebrook School 9
With a close score at halftime, Eaglebrook battled well through the majority of three quarters. Westminster opened doors for them in transition, and on defense, and Eaglebrook was able to capitalize on multiple opportunities, bringing the game to within one. With a few keys saves and some momentum, Westminster was able to settle down on offense, take care of the ball and capitalize on opportunities late in the third. As the fourth quarter wore on, Westminster took control of the game, relying on physical play and discipline.

Lacrosse-Third Boys'
May 15: Lacrosse-Third Boys’ 7 vs Avon Old Farms School 6 (OT)
Westminster hosted Avon for its third game against each other this season. It was a fun game for both teams as the score would be tight at halftime 3-1. The Martlets jump out to a 6-1 lead in the third quarter but it was not close to a commanding one. Avon would battle back to tie the game late at 6-6. It would take overtime where Ral Reyes '20 would win the face-off, however, Westminster could not score. Avon would get the ball back and have a good look at the net but Eddie Lie-A-Cheong '19 would come up with a huge save in tight. The Marlets would clear the ball and get it down behind the net for a good dodge by Daniel Pinckney '20 who would find Ryan Messina '20 high in the slot who placed a great bounce shot five hole. Game ball would go to Messina for his game winner. Lie-A-Cheong was a wall again in net with 12 solid saves.

May 17: Lacrosse-Third Boys’ 4 vs Salisbury School 11

May 19: Lacrosse-Third Boys’ 13 vs Loomis Chaffee 8
On a hot steamy afternoon, the Martlets took the short trip over to Loomis to take on the Pelicans. Both teams played a tight first quarter to a score of 2-1 in favor of Westminster. The offense got it going in the second quarter with four solid goals and great offensive possession time. The third quarter goals were highlighted by Khalil Walker '19 who picked up a ground ball off a face-off scrub and legged with the three-quarters of the field for a goal with his long-stick. The second half saw a lot of great teamwork and unselfish play to make the extra pass. Nate Londal '19 had a strong day in the midfield with many face-offs won and also a great bull-dodge for a goal. Gus Hartmann '20 snuck in a goal late for his first of the season. Eddie Lie-A-Cheong '19 was strong between the pipes again with 12 saves. Game balls went to Travis Paulsen '20 who had the hot hand with five goals and Walker with his strong play at LSM. The team looks forward to the weekend off after three games in five days.

Softball-First Girls'
May 17: Softball-First Girls’ 16 vs Marianapolis Preparatory School 2
Win on Sixth From Day Secures Place in Class A Western New England Tournament
On Sixth Form Day, Brenna Monroe '17 struck out nine and allowed only six base hits as Westminster defeated Marianapolis at home. Emily Samar '18 and Ashlee White '18 had four hits and four RBIs apiece. Gabby Brown '17 had three hits and scored three runs for the Black and Gold. The game began with Marianapolis jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. However, Brown, Monroe, White, and Gabby Nemarich '20 answered with hits in the bottom of the frame to tie the contest 2-2. In the third inning, Samar, White, Katie Neilsen '18, Hannah Stone '18 and Lauren Ferraiuolo '17 had consecutive singles for a 5-2 Martlet advantage. Monroe was in command on the mound, giving up only three Marianapolis hits over the last five innings. Samar caught a terrific game, while Brown, White, Neilsen and Mackenzie Griffith '17 made strong plays in the field. The game remained close until the fifth inning, when Westminster batters delivered eight hits and took an 11-2 lead. During the afternoon, Griffith, Monroe, Nemarich, Stone and Ferraiuolo each had two hits. After the game Westminster recognized the outstanding contributions of Sixth Formers Brown, Griffith, Monroe, Ferraiuolo and Madie Bologa '17. These students have not only led on the field, but also been integral to the great team chemistry and cohesion that characterize the softball program. With the win over Marianapolis, the Martlets secured the #1 seed in the upcoming Class A Western New England Tournament.

Western New England Class A Semi-Final Game
May 20: Softball-First Girls’ 5 vs Taft School 2
In the Class A Western New England Tournament semi-final game, Gabby Brown '17 and Gabby Nemarich '20 had two hits apiece and Brenna Monroe '17 pitched a strong game to lead Westminster over Taft. It was a hard-fought 5-2 win for the Martlets. With both pitchers throwing well, the game was a scoreless tie until the third inning when Westminster sparked a five-run rally with six consecutive hits. Brown had a lead off single, and Monroe, Nemarich, Emily Samar '18 and Ashlee White '18 followed with doubles to give the Martlets a 4-0 advantage. Katie Neilsen '18 then singled to drive in a run and extend the lead. Taft scored in the fourth inning as a hard line drive was misjudged by the Westminster outfielder, and the next batter singled to put the Rhinos on the scoreboard. However, the Martlets shut the door on the rally as Brown made a nice play on a ground ball hit to second base. The last three innings featured excellent pitching and defense by both teams. In the seventh frame, Taft added a run, but White made three fine plays at shortstop to secure the victory for the Black and Gold. Neilsen and Hannah Stone '18 also played very well in the field throughout the afternoon. Monroe was sharp on the mound, allowing just six Taft base hits, and Samar showed grit by catching a great game despite being injured in the fourth inning. Alli Kalvaitis, who pitched well and had two base hits, led Taft. With the win, Westminster remained undefeated and will host the Class A New England Championship game at home on Sunday, May, 21.

Class A Western New England Tournament
May 21: Softball-First Girls' 2 vs Williston Northampton School 0
Brenna Monroe '17 pitched a brilliant game and Westminster played flawlessly in the field as the Martlets defeated a talented Williston Northampton team to capture the Class A New England title. Playing in front of a large home crowd, Westminster jumped out to an early lead when Monroe, Emily Samar '18 and Ashlee White '18 had consecutive doubles in the first inning. Samar and White each had an RBI. However, the game quickly settled into a fantastic duel between two of the top pitchers in the region (Monroe and Williston's Jordan Strum). After yielding a lead off single to the first Wildcat batter in the game, Monroe didn't allow another hit over the next six frames. Throughout the afternoon, Westminster's play in the field was exceptional. Samar caught a fabulous game, highlighted by an impressive catch on a towering popup with a runner on base in the third inning. The entire Martlet infield made strong plays. White, Gabby Brown '17, Katie Neilsen '18 and Hannah Stone '18 fielded bunts, ground balls, and pop ups extremely well. Williston also took away some well-hit balls by playing fine defense. With two outs in the fifth inning, Mackenzie Griffith '17 drilled a line drive to the centerfield fence for a double, but the relays by the Wildcats were perfect and they got the runner out at third. In the sixth frame, Monroe and Samar each launched drives to the fence, but Williston outfielders made catches to keep the score at 2-0. Monroe struck out eight during the afternoon, and Samar called a strong game behind the plate. The contest ended as Neilsen fielded a ground ball, completing a 1-2-3 final inning and setting off a celebration for the Martlets. The win marked the eighth Western New England Championship over 10 years for Westminster. The team has greatly appreciated the significant contributions of Sixth Formers Gabby Brown, Mackenzie Griffith, Brenna Monroe, Madie Bologa and Lauren Ferraiuolo. The leadership and accomplishments of four-year players Brown, Griffith and Monroe have been particularly impressive, as they've led the Martlets to a record of 63 wins and 2 losses during their time at Westminster.

Tennis-First Girls'
May 17: Tennis-First Girls’ 6 vs Loomis Chaffee 3
The Martlets battled the Pelicans in the heat and came away with a 6-3 win. While it wasn't one of the prettiest matches of the season, the Black and Gold was able to get the job done. In doubles, #1 Mary Kille '18 and Lily von Stade '17 proved again why they are so solid, winning convincingly 8-2. Clara Ekholm '20 and Nat Wilson '18 also took control of their match at #2, also winning 8-2. At #3, Maggie Chaves '19 and Alex Wolf '19 fell behind and were ultimately down 4-7. They did not quit, however, and fought back to tie the match. But as often happens, once they evened the score, they could not carry the momentum all the way through and lost 7-9. Von Stade and Kille were winners again in singles, disposing of their opponents 10-3 and 10-1 at #1 and #3 respectively. Ellie Suit '20 sealed the match with her win at #6 10-3. Chaves earned the final victory for the team at #5 singles 10-4. Leta Giordano '17 also played well in exhibition singles to win 8-4. The Martlets next travel to Hopkins for the New England Class B quarterfinals against Cheshire on Saturday.

Class B New England Tournament
May 20: NE Quarterfinals Tennis-First Girls’ 5 vs Cheshire Academy 0
As the #4 seed in the Class B New England Tournament, the Martlets headed down to Hopkins School to face Cheshire Academy, the #5 seed. The Black and Gold got out to a quick start in the doubles. Mary Kille '18 and Lily von Stade '17 at #1 and Clara Ekholm '20 and Nat Wilson '18 at #2 each won decisively 8-1. Maggie Chaves '19 and Alex Wolf '19 were also in control at #3 and took the win 8-2. Five matches went on court for singles, and the Black and Gold won all five first sets. The team match was decided after Kille won 6-0, 6-0 at #3 and Olivia Zhang '20 also refused to drop a game in two sets at #2. Von Stade was a game away from winning at #1 as well as Chaves at #5. With the five matches in hand, the contest was called so the Martlets could rest up before facing Hopkins in the semi-finals.

May 20: Class B Semi-finals Tennis-First Girls’ 0 v. Hopkins 5
In their second match of the day and the New England Tournament, the Martlets played Hopkins, the Class B #1 seed. From the start of the doubles it was clear why Hopkins had earned the top spot in the draw. The #2 and #3 doubles teams for Westminster struggled against hard-hitting and aggressive Hilltoppers. Both teams fell 3-8. Lily von Stade '17 and Mary Kille '18 equaled their opponents however, proving once again that they can play with anyone. They exchanged games with their opponents up to 6-6 before Hopkins pulled away to win the match. In singles, the Martlets faced tough competition at the top, and Hopkins won the two it needed fairly quickly at #1 and #2. Farther down the ladder, the Martlets were trying their best to make a match of it. Nat Wilson '18 won her first set at #4 and Ellie Suit '20 was up 5-3 in the first set at #6 before the match was called. Despite the loss, the Martlets should be proud of their effort in the tournament and all season long.

Tennis-Second Boys'
May 20: Tennis-Second Boys’ 5 vs Avon Old Farms School 2
The weather was ideal for tennis. There were five doubles matches, two exhibitions and three for the team score. Captain Mike Fiorini ’18 and his roommate Zach Tarazi ’18 fought valiantly but lost 1-8. Ryan Lee ’18 and Max Torrez ’18 were down 3-7 and staged a big comeback to tie their match 8-8, when they had to cede the court for singles matches. Ashton Howey ’18 and James Chun ’19 took #3 doubles 8-6 and Alec Costanza ’17 and Scott (Scooby) Wilson ’19 won their final three games to secure the doubles point with a 9-7 win. In singles, Wilson continued his streak winning eight in a row to make the score 2-1 Westminster after the Avon #2 won his singles match. Kevin Kuang ’19 was up 7-6 in his singles at #1 and let it slip away after assuring himself that the team result didn't depend on his match. In exhibition singles, Torrez continued his dominance with another win while Curtis Brockelman ’19 posted an 8-2 win and, in typical fashion, was rather annoyed about the two. At #6 Chun took his match 8-4 despite numerous double faults. His win gave the team a 3-1 lead with three matches still going. Cam Jury ’19 was up 6-3 and playing very steadily. He finished with an 8-5 win securing the team win. Meanwhile, Howey, who had been down 0-7, was staging an amazing comeback. He got every shot back and waited for short balls that he drilled left and right for winners. After taking nine games in a row, Howey earned the fifth and final point for the Martlets.

Tennis-Third Coed
May 17: Tennis-Third Coed 1 vs Hotchkiss School 6
On a warm but breezy May 17, Third Girls’ Tennis took on the Third Girls’ team from Hotchkiss, ultimately losing 1-6. The heat was a factor in Westminster's line-up, and Isabel von Bargen-Burke '19 found herself playing for the first time at #1 singles. She played a strong opponent from Hotchkiss, and both von Bargen-Burke and Angelesia Ma '20, playing #3 doubles, found themselves outmatched. Faring better (but also ultimately losing the six-game pro set) at #2 singles was Donatella Mancinone '18 and #4 singles Ozzy Kutluel '18. Both of the latter matches featured many close points as well as strong returns from both girls. The doubles games were quite exciting, and the lone win of the day came from the #2 doubles pair of Lily Carrel '19 and Chloe Ferro '20. Luckily, Ferro 's mother arrived from Chicago in time to see her win her first match wearing black and gold. The first and third doubles games were very exciting and came down to the wire. Ultimately losing 5-7 at #1 doubles were Jo Jeong '17 and Michelle Kim '20. Also playing extremely well and showing a great deal of progress since the beginning of the season were Lizzy McCoy '20 and Sofia Morales '19 playing #3 doubles.

May 20: Tennis-Third Coed 4 vs Williston Northampton School 3
The Martlets hosted Williston on a beautiful afternoon, and came away the victors in a closely contested match. The match opened with one point up for grabs with the three doubles teams. Alex Ellis '20 and Vincent Wang '19 easily won their match 8-1, while the other two doubles matches were close. Brad Donegan '20 and Zach Burelle '20 pulled off their first victory as a team at #3, winning 8-6. Eda Chen '20 and Nick Wee '18 played #1 singles and fell 4-8; both played well keeping the ball in play. At singles, Darian Purcell '19 at #3, Jack Hajdukiewicz '18 at #4 and Kai Edmonds '19 at #6 singles all faced strong opponents whose style of play matched their own. Purcell won 8-4, Hajdukiewicz won handily 8-2, and Edmonds lost by the slimmest of margins with a score of 6-8. The outcome of the match would depend on the result of the first three singles. Aidan Wood '20, playing at #1, ultimately fell to a talented player who was able to return most every type of shot that Wood had in his arsenal. Scott Lee '20, playing at #2, also faced a tough opponent, and the final score of 3-8 masks the number of terrific rallies and great shots that Lee had in his game. Finally, with the score tied at 3-3, the match came down to the #3 singles Quoc Truong '20. Of the top three, Truong’s match was very close, and many games went to deuce a number of times. Truong ultimately prevailed, winning his match 8-5 and securing the win for the Martlets.
