Winter Sports Highlights 2.20.17

Basketball-First Girls'
Feb. 15: Basketball-First Girls’ 36 vs Kent School 49
Westminster played some of its best basketball in a while, but it just wasn't enough. Kent made too many jumpers and Westminster couldn't take advantage of enough of its own opportunities. Westminster was within five late in the game, but some defensive breakdowns, missed shots and clutch free throws by Kent put the game out of hand. Paige Phillips '20 and Emma Alpaugh '18 were leading scorers, and Jaclyn Laplante ’20 contributed key passes, rebounds and defensive plays.

Feb. 18: Basketball-First Girls’ 17 vs Suffield Academy 52
Westminster gave a pretty good effort Feb. 18, but struggled with turnovers and failed to convert most of the open shot opportunities. Led by Sophie Tawney '17, the team rebounded well. Bethany Winters '20 scored a career-high 10 points, and Laura Velez '20 and Jaclyn Laplante '20 contributed good defensive energy off the bench.

Basketball-First Boys'
‪Feb. 15: Basketball-First Boys’ 69 vs Berkshire School 54
The Martlets jumped out to an early lead against Berkshire and went up 21-8. It was an up and down game for most of the first half and the Martlets went up as much as 18 points. However, Berkshire clawed its way back and the Martlets saw their lead shrink to 13 going into the half. Devonte McCall '17 led all scorers with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Josiah Green '18 added 14 points and four assists. Payton Prendergast '17 had a thunderous dunk that gave the entire team a momentum boost during the second half. The Martlets pulled away late and everyone was able to see some action. It was a good team win.

Feb. 17: Basketball-First Boys’ 74 vs Marianapolis Preparatory School 63
The Martlets came out with high energy against a tough Marianapolis team. Marianapolis shot the ball well in the first half. However, the Martlets maintained the lead the entire way. Devonte McCall '17 led the way with his first triple double of the season. Payton Prendergast '17 also had a strong game on defense. Third Former Chris Robinson ‘20, also recorded a double double with 13 points and 10 assists. Daniel Kong '17, also had 14 points and helped Westminster to its ninth win of the season. It was an all around good game for the Martlets.

Basketball-Second Girls'
Feb. 15: Basketball-Second Girls’ 32 vs Kent School 22
The team faced a quick and athletic Kent team on Feb. 15. Westminster struggled to find the basket in the first half, only scoring 12 points to Kent's 14. After lots of defensive pressure and turnovers, the girls were able to find the momentum and find the hoop to get themselves back on the board. In the last nine minutes of the second half, the team, down 18-12, went on a 20-4 run to win the game 32-22. Brenna Monroe '17 led the team with 14 points, and Ridgely Green '20 followed with nine points.

‪Feb. 15: Basketball-Third Boys’ 32 vs Avon Old Farms School 40
On Feb. 15, despite a good start by the Martlets, the team was down by two at the half. The Martlets generated great offense led by co-captain Edward Lie-A-Cheong '19 with 16 points and Henry Mitrano '19 with seven points. Defense was solid the whole game, led by co-captain Zach Tarazi '18 with three blocks.

Feb. 17: Basketball-Third Boys’ 55 vs Loomis Chaffee 53
On Feb. 17, the Martlets traveled to nearby Loomis for a 4:30 tip. The Pelicans of Loomis started off hot going into the half up by 21. The Martlets regrouped at the half and stormed back into the game. The offense was lead by Jack Siebert '17 who exploded for 20 points. Co-captain Edward Lie-A-Cheong '19 dropped 14 points and Jack Stevenson '18 played through sickness and iced the game with two free throws leaving only two seconds left in the game. Henry Mitrano '19 and Harry Stevenson '20 led the defense. The Martlets overcame a 21-point deficit and won the game 55-53. Mitrano won The Powerade Player of the Game for his defensive efforts.

Hockey-First Girls'
‪Feb. 15: Hockey-First Girls’ 2 vs Taft School 2
Westminster rallied from behind on Feb. 15 to tie a talented Taft team on the road. After falling behind 2-0, the team kept working to earn chances of its own. Finally with just ‪1:30 left in the second period, Lilly Holmes '18 scored off a rebound from a shot by Cynnie White '17. The team could feel the momentum swinging in its direction. The third period was a physical battle, but Westminster did not back down. With just three minutes left, forward Jill Parsons '19 scored a beautiful goal off a pass from Rosy Sieglaff '18. Overtime belonged to Westminster as they outshot Taft 7 to 0. They couldn't find the game winner, but it was a great effort to come back from the 2-0 deficit. Leah Klassen '17 was solid in net.

Feb. 18: Hockey-First Girls’ 2 vs Berkshire School 3
Westminster put up a good fight Feb. 18 against Berkshire School. The first period was fast-paced and Westminster goalie Hannah Stone '18 was outstanding making 16 saves in the first period. Westminster was able to get a fast break with just one minute left. Jill Parsons '19 snuck by her defenseman and sent a perfect pass to a breaking Megan Rittenhouse '20. Rittenhouse used her speed wide and took a wrist shot that sailed over the Berkshire goalie's shoulder. Westminster struggled to gain momentum in the second period and Berkshire took advantage scoring twice by the 10-minute mark. Westminster answered back 20 seconds later as Rittenhouse struck again off a rebound from Parsons and Emma Lange '18. With the game tied heading into the third, both teams buckled down and looked to secure the lead. Westminster had some power play chances, but could not break the tie. Berkshire kept at it and pounded home a rebound with just five minutes left. Despite a valiant effort with the goalie pulled, Westminster could not tie it up.

Hockey-First Boys'
‪Feb. 15: Hockey-First Boys’ 2 vs Loomis Chaffee 1 (OT)
With redemption on their minds, the Martlets earned a much-needed victory against the visiting Pelicans on Feb. 15. Loomis struck first late in the second period off a quick rush up the ice and a defensive error in zone by the Martlets. Five-on-five, the game was fairly even, though Westminster held the momentum through much of the game. Physical play and speed played into the Martlets favor. John Hunt ‘17 scored shortly after Loomis, evening the score going into the third period. The third period was a back and forth affair, and the game went into overtime. Both teams traded penalties in OT, but Westminster was able to capitalize on its opportunity when Cam Scott ‘18 redirected a feed from Pat Dawson ‘18 into the back of the net.

Feb. 18: Hockey-First Boys’ 3 vs Berkshire School 4
It was a disappointing loss for the Martlets at Berkshire on Feb. 18. Though the Martlets struck first when Sam Knowlton ‘17 zipped one past the Berkshire goalie, the team did not show up to play until midway through the game. The second period opened with a fourth unanswered goal for Berkshire as a result of sloppy defensive zone play and missed assignments. Down 4-1, the challenge was formidable. Not to be dissuaded, Westminster elevated its game, outplaying Berkshire for the second half of the game. Multiple opportunities, and an energized offensive effort helped the team inch back and make it a game. Michael Fiorini ‘18 scored off a tip from the point, and Tasso Housakos ‘18 added a third in the early part of the third period. Westminster did all but find the back of the net in the final minutes. Though the score was not in their favor, the Martlets battled with the odds stacked against them and proved resilient.

‪Feb. 15: Hockey-Second Girls' 4 vs Taft School 8

Feb. 16: Westminster School 3 vs Springfield Falcons U14 2 (OT)
Megan Rittenhouse ’20 had a hat trick and Lily Farriss ’19 was outstanding for the team in goal.

Hockey-Second Boys'
Feb. 18: Hockey-Second Boys’ 6 vs Berkshire School 1
Second Boys’ Hockey hosted Berkshire in a matinee affair at Jackson Rink. The visiting Bears got off to a slow start, allowing the Martlets to score three times in the first five minutes of the initial period. Conor Brennan '17 won the scrum in front of the opponents' net to earn the first goal of the game. Linemates Jeffrey Guiliano '17 and Brendan Jacobs '17 got the assists. Darion Benchich '20 and captain Jack Griffith '17 worked the puck to Max Powers '17, who scored the second tally off the left post. Then, "lunch pail" Jacobs scored in his usual fashion by being tenacious and gritty in front of the Berkshire net. Brennan and Guiliano both assisted the play. The visitors scored the first goal of the second period off a bad line change by the Martlets. However, the hosts increased the margin by three goals during the second period when Quinn Armstrong '20 cleaned up a Merlin Ennis '17 shot and rebound. Charlie Flam '20 made the pass to Ennis and earned an assist on the goal. Flam and Peter Hall '18 earned additional assists on a Walker Stevens '19 seeing-eye shot from the top of the offensive zone circle with only six seconds to go in the middle frame. Westminster got its sixth and final goal from Powers after he weaved through several Berkshire Bears and produced a pretty deke finish. Hall and Griffith were credited with the assists. Alex Gadowski '18 was strong in the net when needed, generating 21 saves on the day. Berkshire certainly aided the home team with some undisciplined play and many penalties. Although the power play unit moved the puck well, hitting several crossbars and pipes, they could only muster one man-up goal in the game.

Hockey-Third Boys'
Feb. 15: Hockey-Third Boys’ 2 vs Avon Old Farms School 3
The Feb. 15 tilt against across town rival Avon didn't disappoint for those in attendance at Jackson Rink. Both teams went after this game from the opening whistle, and the Martlets came out with energy and focus. With a little more puck luck in support of an impressive team-wide effort and grit factor, the Black and Gold might have taken down the Winged Beavers. In the end, Avon beat Westminster 3-2 and withstood a swarm of six players in the final minutes trying to will one more in the back of Avon's net. All three forward lines played well, supported by solid play from the defensive unit too. Jack Murdock '19 converted on a pass from Willie Noble '20, and SK Lee '18 scored on a hard, low wrist shot.

‪Feb. 18: Hockey-Third Boys’ 6 vs Berkshire School 7 (OT)
It was almost expected that the hosting Martlets would find themselves amidst another thrilling battle with the visiting Berkshire Bears. From early on the Black and Gold identified their nemesis in a speedy and skilled Berkshire centerman who was difficult to contain, scoring as many as four goals over the course of the evening. With early Martlet goals coming from Ryan Szykowny '18 and SK Lee '18, the team trailed 2-6 after the second intermission. With a shortening of bench and a mantra of "getting back into this thing," the Martlets did just that and more in what perhaps was the most exciting period of play for the season. Szykowny ignited the team with a picture perfect deke on a penalty shot that told the fans to hold on. Reeling off three more goals in the final eight minutes -- another by Szykowny, one by Josh Cosentino '18, and a highlight reel tip in by Grant Noble '18, Third Boys’ Hockey had clearly seized the momentum and turned Jackson Rink into a raucous affair. But Berkshire's stealthy centerman was not yet done either, jumping on a Martlet miscue early in overtime and putting an end to Westminster's unlikely comeback. A special shout out to Azat Mukhametkulov '19, Galym Sarkytbayev '19, Michael Wade '19 and Alex Hu '19 who meaningfully jumped into the action for the first time this season, showing a high compete level and great personal strides since the season's start.

Squash-First Girls'
Feb. 15: Squash-First Girls’ 6 vs Kent School 1
The girls got back on track with a 6-1 win over Kent. All of the matches ended with 3-0 results, including the lone loss, which was a most narrow one (9-11, 10-12, 10-12), as well as a win in an exhibition match.

Feb. 17: Squash-First Girls’ 1 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 6
The Martlets took a depleted squad to West Hartford and were outplayed by a veteran Wyvern team. Captain Abby Leblanc '17 brought her season record to 15-3 in recording the team's lone win at #1. The next three players went down in three, but not without putting up some good resistance. Katie Kosior '18 fought well (5, 9, 8) at #2, Caroline Miller '18 gained strength late in her match at #3 (4, 2, 9) and Rebecca Sargent '20 also finished strong (5, 2, 8) playing up four spots at #4. Annabel Bradley '19 was one of two players besides Leblanc to take a game, falling 7, (2), 3, 6 at #5; the other was Annie Hicks '17, making her First Team debut at #6 (6, 7, (9), 2). Also making their first appearances were Lily Mahoney '17 who made a very respectable showing at #7 (3, 8, 5) and Georgia Swank '19, who won her exhibition match in three (13, 9, 5).

Squash-First Boys'
Feb. 16: Squash-First Boys’ 3 vs Loomis Chaffee 4

‪Feb. 18: Squash-First Boys’ 5 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 2
The Martlets arrived in Wallingford Feb. 18 expecting to give The Wild Boars of Choate a good fight. Choate had beaten some teams that defeated the Westminster squad so Choate was favored at home. Westminster had different ideas, though. Captain Will Leathers ’17 lost his match at number two and #4 Chanler Miller ’18 had a match ball in game four before taking his fifth game 11-3 against a very discouraged opponent. At #6 Sean Ryan ’18 had to battle for every point. He lost his first game in a tiebreaker and won the last two in tiebreakers to give the team a crucial win. With a 2-1 lead and Aly Tolba ’18 and Andrew Doucette ’18 still to play, things were looking good. Connor Seeley ’18 played three tiebreakers at #5, but all went against him. Just three more rallies for him would have put another win in the Westminster column. Tolba lost his first game and Doucette lost 1-11 in game two. Both matches were tied 1-1 and the whole match was still up in the air. Tolba kept the pressure on and won in four. Doucette changed pace and also won in four despite five unforced errors in the last game. Riley Wood ’19 had the key match at #7. After dropping game one, 2-11, Wood bounced back and won the second 11-4. Then after trading 11-6 games, he found himself up 10-6. His opponent tied the game at 10 and then tinned an easy ball giving Wood one more match ball, which he converted. He has become the new master of five game matches.

Squash-Second Girls'
Feb. 15: Squash-Second Girls’ 6 vs Kent School 1
Second Girls’ Squash hosted Kent School and prevailed by a 6-1 score. Annie Hicks '17 won at #2 (3, 2, 6), Georgia Swank '19 won at #4 (3, 5, 3) and Brinley Cuddeback '17 prevailed at #6 (3, 2, 1) to get the girls started. They were followed up by Eve Cathcart '20 winning at #3 (3, 3, 6), Elaina Comia '19 winning at #5 (0, 1, 1), Nikki Armour '17 prevailing at #7 (8, 2, 3). Lily Mahoney '17 came up just short at #1 (7, 11, (6), 4). Olivia Zhang '20, Sam Monte "17, Stacia McBreen '18 and Sydney Autorino '17 all won their exhibition matches.

Feb. 17: Squash-Second Girls’ 5 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 2
Second Girls’ Squash traveled to Kingswood to play a very competitive Wyvern squad. The girls came away with a 5-2 victory mostly because of their grit and determination. The girls started strong winning all three first round matches. Georgia Swank '19 (#2), Elaina Comia '19 (#4) and Nikki Armour '17 (#6) won their matches with Swank and Comia winning in three straight and Armour winning in four. The odd numbered matches followed with the girls only needing one of the remaining matches to clinch the victory. Maddie Dwyer '18 (#1), Eve Cathcart '20 (#3), Brinley Cuddeback '17 (#5) and Olivia Zhang '20 (#7) all fell behind two games to zero. So one of the girls had to win three straight to win the team match. Fortunately, both Zhang and Cathcart made amazing comebacks to win their matches in five games. Cuddeback also almost came all the way back, winning the third and fourth games, before falling 12-10 in the fifth. Sam Monte '17 and Sydney Autorino '17 both won their exhibition matches.

Feb. 18: Squash-Second Girls’ 6 vs Miss Porter's School 1
Second Girls’ Squash won its fifth match in a row as the team defeated Miss Porter's School by a 6-1 score. Lily Mahoney '17 (#2), Georgia Swank '19 (#4) and Elaina Comia '19 (#6) got the girls off to a quick 3-0 lead with Mahoney winning in three (9, 8, 9), Swank in four ((11), 5, 4, 5) and Comia in three (8, 5, 10). In the second round of matches, Maddie Dwyer '18 (#3) prevailed in four games ((8), 8, 7, 9), Eve Cathcart '20 (#5) won in five games ((10), 4, (7), 10, 8) and Nikki Armour '17 (#7) won in three (1, 8, 10). Olivia Zhang '20 and Sam Monte '17 both won their exhibition matches.

Squash-Second Boys'
Feb. 16: Squash-Second Boys’ 0 vs Loomis Chaffee 8
Because of an injury to Sean Ryan '18, everyone on Second Boys’ Squash had to play up on Feb. 16 in the match against Loomis, which Westminster lost 0-8. Loomis is a talented and deep team. But three of the matches went to five games and two others went to four games. The young Martlets played hard. Their improvement this year promises to pay big dividends next year.

Feb. 17: Squash-Second Boys’ 0 vs Eaglebrook School 9
Unfortunately, the Martlets seem to be making a habit of playing competitive squash against very talented teams but losing all the close matches. For example, Westminster lost all nine matches against Eaglebrook Feb. 17, but three of those matches were hotly contested five-gamers and two others were close four-game matches. Even the three-game losses were filled with hard-fought, entertaining points. Chris Hark '17 and Khalil Walker '19, at #s 3 and 4 respectively, earned the nails for their gritty play.

Feb. 18: Squash-Second Boys’ 1 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 7
The Martlets fell by a score of 1-7 to a talented and experienced Choate team on Feb. 18 in a match played in Wallingford. Although five of the individual matches were decided in straight games, Chris Hark '17 pushed his opponent to four games at #2 before losing 11, (5), (7), (8), and Ethan Na '19 rallied from a two-game deficit to take his opponent to a deciding fifth game at #8, ultimately losing (10), (3), 4, 8, (6). A real bright spot for the Black and Gold was the play of Khalil Walker '19 who won his match at #3 in four games, 7, 8, (9), 7. Walker has been playing outstanding squash in recent weeks, the product of a season's worth of hard work.

Squash-Third Girls'
Feb. 15: Squash-Third Girls’ 4 vs Miss Porter's School 3
Victories from Daniela Mays-Sanchez ‘20, Michelle Kim ‘20, Sofia Raymond ‘19 and Mia Poling ‘18. Poling had a particularly hard-won victory, coming back from a 5-9 deficit in the fifth game of her set.

Feb. 18: Squash-Third Girls' 6 vs Canterbury School 1

Squash-Third Boys'
Feb. 17: Squash-Third Boys' 7 vs Eaglebrook School 4
What a difference a few months make. Back on Dec. 3, the Martlets opened their season against Eaglebrook and were soundly defeated, unable to win even a single match. Fast forward to Feb. 17, and things have changed dramatically. Westminster won seven out of the 11 matches, and came within a few points of winning an eighth. All but one of those victories were 3-0 sweeps, with Boyan Alipiev ’19, Travis Paulsen ’20, Scott Lee ’20, Quoc Truong ’20, Will Carlisle ’19 and Carter Henshaw ’20 securing the W. Special kudos go out to Henshaw for his first Westminster squash victory. Vincent Wang ’19 dropped his first game by only two points, and then just kept getting better and better, winning his next three games by margins of two, five, and finally 10 points. Jack Hajdukiewicz ’18 eked out two point victories in his first two games, but his opponent rallied back to win the next three. Dinh Truong ’19, whose overall play has improved exponentially, played valiantly in a losing effort. At the top of the ladder, Spencer Organ ’18 and Ryan Lee ’18 were simply outmatched by two skilled, crafty and relentless opponents.

Feb. 18: Squash-Third Boys' 7 vs Salisbury School 4
The Westminster and Salisbury squads squared off for the third time this season, with the series tied at one match apiece, as each team won on its home turf. Once again, the home field advantage prevailed, as the hosting Martlets came out on top. For the second time in as many days, Boyan Alipiev ’19, Scott Lee ’20, Quoc Truong ’20 and Carter Henshaw ’20 won their respective matches in straight sets. Alipiev was especially dominant, allowing his opponent only eight points for the entire match. Vincent Wang ’19 used his deep backhand shots and timely boasts to keep his opponent off-balance for the entire match. Jack Hajdukiewicz ’18 rebounded from a tough five set loss the day before to secure the victory, wining his last two games convincingly. With Salisbury down to eight players, Will Carlisle ’19 and Dinh Truong ’19 had their hands full with opponents significantly higher up on the ladder. Playing at #1 and #2, respectively, Spencer Organ ’18 and Ryan Lee ’18 each found themselves down 2-1 going into the fourth game. Both players came close to pulling off the comeback, with Lee going down 11-9 and Organ, in a nail biter, losing 16-14. In the match of the day, Travis Paulsen ’20 went the full five games to pull off a stunning 13-11 victory.

Feb. 18: Swimming/Diving-First Girls’ 37 vs Miss Porter's School 65
First Girls’ Swimming and Diving traveled to New Haven and scrapped with two solid teams, losing both meets on Feb. 18. Dorka Nagy '19 and Jane Ogden '19 were the only individual event winners on the afternoon, Nagy with a good swim in the 100 Breaststroke and Ogden with the top score in diving. The 200 Medley Relay team of Alexandra Lin '19, Nagy, co-captain Leta Giordano '17 and Liza Lennox '18 kicked things off with a third place finish in the first event. Co-captain Nathali Madrid '17 swam a good 200 Free to place fourth, and Giordano took third in the 200 IM with her best time. Alex Wolf '19 followed up with her best time in the 50 Free, good for fourth place, and also swam a lifetime best in the 100 Freestyle. Giordano began the second half of the meet with a second place finish in the 100 Fly, and Lin was third in the 100 Free with Lennox fourth with her best time. Madrid swam a solid 500 Free to place fourth and then swam a fast split in the 200 Freestyle Relay along with Elisabeth Morin '18, Dallis Alvarez '18 and Wolf to place fourth. Lin and co-captain Elizabeth Brewer '17 took fifth and sixth in the 100 Back, respectively, and Angelesia Ma '20 swam a lifetime best in the 100 Breaststroke to take fifth. The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Giordano, Wolf, Lennox and Lin took second.

Swimming/Diving-First Boys'
Feb. 18: Swimming/Diving-First Boys’ 46 vs Avon Old Farms School 55
Feb. 18: Swimming/Diving-First Boys’ 35 vs Hopkins School 65
First Boys’ Swimming and Diving was a mixed bag on Feb. 18, battling some illness and fatigue as the team raced speedy opponents from Hopkins and AOF. The 200 Medley Relay team of Albert Gao '18, Matt Norris '19, co-captain Jordan Gabbidon '17, and co-captain Joel Groves '17 took third, and Emmett de Kanter '19 and Teagan Stedman '18 placed fifth and sixth in the 200 Freestyle, respectively, with an impressive lifetime best swim by Stedman. Groves was second in the diving event, and Norris finished as the runner up in the 100 Fly, with co-captain Gary Simons ’17 in sixth. Gabbidon was fourth in the 100 Freestyle, with de Kanter fifth, and Norris was third in the 500 Free. After a quick turnaround, Norris led off the 200 Free Relay along with de Kanter, Simons and Groves, to finish third. Gabbidon and Gao were second and third, respectively, in the 100 Backstroke, and Stedman swam another lifetime best to take second in the 100 Breaststroke, with Hayden Cathcart '18 in fourth. Gao, Simons, Groves and Gabbidon swam a senior relay in their final race of their dual meet career (excepting Gao '18), with Gabbidon storming from behind to catch AOF's anchorman in the final yards to place second.
