Martlets Defeat Hillside

Hungry for their first victory of 2023 after two close defeats, the Martlets squared off against an always tough Hillside and emerged with a 4-0 victory.  With greater intensity and an uptempo style of play, the squad came out flying and worked hard in all three zones while putting pressure on Hillside by finishing their checks and working hard in the corners. Going up 3-0 after one period of play and then adding another in the second frame, the Black and Gold held onto their momentum and kept moving the puck up ice.  Alex Martinez '26 was solid throughout the game, making key saves and effectively controlling his rebounds as Hillside tried to get on the board.  Westminster's scoring was spread out among forwards with James Frangos '24 starting things off on a beautiful shot from the slot after Evin Curtiss '24 feathered a crisp pass his way.  Jack Degulis '23 would strike next after a battle off the boards and then a laser wrist shot into the upper right hand corner to notch the second of the game.  First period scoring would continue as Jayden Lee '25 took a nice pass from linemate Frangos, cut across the slot and let go a heavy wrist shot through traffic.  Ben Norten '25 would close out the scoring in the second stanza as he streaked through neutral ice and received a targeted pass from defenseman Corbin Simons '25.  Making a strong wide move to the cage, Norton would finish with a deft shot through the five hole.  The defensive corps had another solid game to support the forwards and help Martinez notch the shutout.  Collectively, they played smart, physical and strategic. Unfortunately, the team took a few bad penalties late in the game and exhibited some undisciplined conduct that has no place in the culture of this team and its collective aspirations.  The team will be right back at it on Saturday against an always competitive Salisbury squad.
