Martlets Fall to T-P

The Martlets skated into the 2023 campaign with an anticipated close, competitive contest against the Lions from Trinity Pawling.  With almost a three week layoff for the holidays, both teams needed a little time to find their respective rhythms with an emphasis on hard, short shifts.  Evenly matched the Martlets exchanged great scoring opportunities with their opponents with some exciting and well-played end to end action.  Both goalies were more than up to the task with Max Hausman '25 turning away shots from afar and in close while signaling that he would be stingy throughout the afternoon.  The TP goalie, however, was every bit his equal and not giving much daylight to the Black and Gold scorers at the other end of the ice.  TP would strike first late in the 2nd.  The line of Jack Degulis '23, Jackson Alpaugh '23, and Augie Barrett '24 found some nice chemistry together in the offensive zone with some wonderful scoring chances particularly when Degulis sent Alpaugh in all alone, only to be stymied by the TP tender.  Throughout the afternoon, the defensive corps of Jack Carter '25, Jack Rockefeller '25, Miles Kim '24, Corbin Simon '25, Evin Curtiss '24, and Stuart Dorman '23 were solid as both Carter and Curtis jumped into the offensive to support the forwards.  However, it wasn't until the final 1:30 that the Martlets would get on the board with a Curtiss laser pass to a speedy Ben Norton '24 through neutral ice before the TP goalie made an initial save and James Frangos '25  gathered the rebound in an confidently roofed the puck into the upper right hand corner of the net.  Unfortunately, a late penalty put the Martlets at a disadvantage as the teams entered the overtime bracket, and TP quickly converted on a long shot from the point that was deflected past Hausman right side.  A disappointing defeat for sure as the Martlets regroup and work harder in practice to finish their scoring chances.  Next up Taft in Watertown on Wednesday.
