Martlets Fall in Opener

The Westminster Girls Varsity basketball team opened their 2022-2023 season this Wednesday afternoon against the Dragons of Green Farms Academy. The Martlets started the game with Parker Perillo ‘26, Lauren Neuman ‘25, and seniors Mather Thompson ‘23, Mari Camara ‘23, and Ruthie Haims ‘23. The squad had a great first quarter, as they looked to execute multiple plays for the first time on the floor. Due to a gritty defensive battle from the Dragons, the Martlets only had a few looks at the rim in the first eight minutes. Despite only having slim opportunity at the hoop, Neuman was able to drain two threes in the first quarter. Thompson was also able to get her first points of the season off of a composed layup. The Martlets worked hard to stay in the game and finished the first quarter down 8-15. In the second quarter, Westminster was only able to get a single point off of a free throw shot from Bianca D’Onofrio ‘23. Unfortunately, the Martlets gave up some turnovers which led to a large run for Green Farms Academy. Westminster entered the third quarter down 11-47, but remained gritty and did not give up. Neuman was able to score her eighth point of the game off of a long 2-point look. In the fourth quarter, the Martlets were a bit successful in the paint thanks to Thompson who scored another layup, and D’Onofrio who scored four points off of two drives at the basket. Green Farms Academy took home the win today with a 17-58 final score. The Martlets look forward to getting a few more practices in before their next game against the Wyverns of Kingswood Oxford this Saturday. The game will be played away in West Hartford and will be at 3:00 PM.
