Martlets Shutout Pomfret

This Wednesday, the Westminster Girls Varsity soccer team celebrated and thanked their Sixth Formers with a special senior day against the Griffins of Pomfret. Before taking the field, the Martlets honored their eight seniors who have given so much to the program over the years: Amber Caruso, Bianca D’Onofrio, Elizabeth DiBlasi, Elizabeth Symonds, Gabby Haughton, Kalilah Akbar, Paige Smith, and manager Mariama Camara. With high energy and excitement for their seniors, the Martlets came ready to play. While they had a few early opportunities near the net, Westminster was not able to get their first point on the board until 23 minutes remaining in the first half. After a cross from Jillian Gregorski ‘24 into the box which was cleared by the Griffins, Kailtyn McQueeney ‘24 headed the ball into the box for Mia Fluckiger ‘26. Fluckiger was quick to take a one-touch turn and finish the ball in the upper 90. Shortly after, Gregoski received the ball from Kalilah Akbar ‘23 off of a throw-in, dribbled endline, and sliced it back to Fluckiger at the top of the 6. With poise, Fluckger finished the ball one-touch on the ground and into the back of the Griffin net. Two minutes later, Fluckiger returned the favor to Gregorski. Off of a great clearance from Bianca D’Onofrio ‘23, Fluckiger beat the defender to the ball, dribbled endline, and found Gregorski for the one-touch finish. Westminster entered the second half up 3-0, but was able to get another within the first two minutes of play. After receiving the ball from Haley Cramer’s ‘24 win off of a Pomfret throw-in, Paige Smith ‘23 played a great leading through ball into McQueeney. McQueeney dribbled into the box with two speedy touches and placed the ball past the goalkeeper and into the far corner. The final goal of the match was from Smith with ten minutes remaining. After a corner from Maya Goddard ‘26 and a shuffle in the box between the Griffins and Martlets, Smith powerfully finished the ball one-touch into the back of the net. A true team effort, the Martlets played for their seniors today and celebrated a well-deserved win. The Westminster Girls’ Varsity soccer team concluded their regular-season play with a 14-2 record. What a day to be a Martlet!
