Martlets Tie Berkshire

For the third time this season, the girls played well enough to win, but had to come from behind to salvage a tie, this time on a weirdly warm day at Berkshire. Playing against the wind in the first half, the Martlets still had the upper hand, although the Bears applied good pressure and were very dangerous with their quick counterattacks. About midway through the opening frame, the hosts drew first blood on a beautiful volley of a ball fed from deep in the corner. The Martlets equalized about ten minutes later when Schuyler Groves ‘26 gathered in a cross just outside of the box and drilled it into the upper 90. The Bears retook the lead with just three minutes to go in the half when their speedy striker got behind the back line for a breakaway. Getting the wind behind us helped for the second half, as did a sharpening of the passing game. Still, it took until the 76th minute for the Martlets to equalize again, this time courtesy of a magnificent long shot off of the foot of Caroline Pokorny ‘26. Today’s shoutout goes to Ruthie Haims ‘23 for her show of heart, determination and ball-winning in central midfield. The girls will be happy to be back home for their match with Pomfret on Wednesday.
