Martlets Fall on the Road

After a long, strange bus ride to Greenwich, the Martlets were grateful that GA pushed the game back to get a short warmup in. Westminster had its best start in a while, setting the tone early and earning an early lead just minutes into the contest. Unfortunately, that shot would be the last that the Martlets took in the game and, not surprisingly, the Gators stormed back on their Senior Day and began to challenge the Martlets all over the field, quickly tying the score off of a quick shot in the circle. With just a minute to play, the Martlets had momentum inside the GA circle, however the Gators made the stop and took the ball all the way down the field to fire a reverse shot straight to the back of the net. Westminster struggled to find a rhythm in the second quarter and the Gators continued to control the play, adding another goal before halftime to bring the score to 3-1. The Martlets had two injuries early in the second half that moved several people to new positions. After giving up another goal, Westminster unfortunately began to play a less-disciplined game, committing too many fouls and letting small mistakes get in the way of their focus - all things that cannot happen when playing such a strong and disciplined team like GA. India Campbell ‘24 made several key saves after entering the game at halftime. The Martlets will learn from this loss and look to improve before facing Taft in a big Founders’ League matchup on Wednesday.
