Martlets Defeat Granby

The Fourth Boys soccer squad secured their first victory of the season against the Granby Bears on a sunny and cold afternoon on Wilbraham Field. Speedy striker Jack Doherty ‘26 put Westminster on the board early in the game after receiving a beautiful pass from striker Brody DiBeneditto ‘26 (one his two assists on the day). The Granby Bears, competing hard all game despite not having any subs, evened the score minutes later, capitalizing on a Westminster defensive breakdown. Westminster worked to tighten up its defense, led by an especially strong performance from Liam Murray ‘26, and good goaltending from Danny Maher ‘26 and Jack Pickett ‘26. As the match progressed, the Martlets wore down the Bears with Westminster scoring four unanswered goals: one from Captain Thomas Blouin ‘26, another from Teddy Russell ‘26 (his first of the season), and two more from Jack Doherty ‘26, capping off his hat trick. Teddy’s goal, a one-touch of Aidan O’Callaghan’s nicely-placed corner kick, was the most memorable of the season so far. The Martlets can’t celebrate their first victory for too long, however, as they look to pick up a second win in their third and final game against Avon at home this Saturday for Parents’ Weekend.
