Martlets defeat Hopkins

Today’s lopsided score obscures the fact that Hopkins has good players and a nice passing game. The difference was in the potency of the Martlets’ offense. The girls did a nice job of getting behind the visitors’ defense and then converting on many of the chances they generated. Playing for the first time this year at striker, Alice Tao ‘24 got the hosts on the board with a nice long shot in the 8th minute. The lead was doubled in the 19th minute on one of the nicest scoring plays of the season. Parker Perillo ‘26 took the ball to the end line and delivered a perfect cross that was laid off by Alexi Haimes ‘23 onto the foot of Colby Smith ‘24 for the cool finish. Haimes scored five minutes later off of another assist from Perillo, and then again three minutes after that after winning the ball deep in the offensive end. Ava Beckford ‘23 scored the final goal of the first half after gathering in a nice through ball in the 29th minute. Haimes completed her hat trick four minutes into the second half when she pushed home a ball after Tao hit a shot into the post. In the 63rd minute, Beckford set up Eliza Cabot ‘24 for the seventh goal, then four minutes later finished off the scoring herself with a nice shot following some nifty dribbling. Today’s shout outs go to Tao for her numerous nice short passes, and to Jennifer Yang ‘25 for tenacious defending to shut down some would-be counterattacks.
