Martlets Win on the Road

Westminster traveled over the Litchfield Hills on a beautiful Autumn afternoon (not quite peak foliage, but nearly so) to Salisbury School for an afternoon tilt with the Crimson Knights. The Martlets controlled the play for good stretches, stringing together several long passing combinations and generating attack after attack. Captain Lawrence Taylor '23, Abraham Monsee '26, and Tommy Cramer '23 anchored the midfield and controlled possession, aided by center backs Murad Assadi '23, Kade Smith '23, and, at times, Jaden Goodsell '23. But this consistent possession did not translate into concrete scoring chances, as Salisbury's backs and keeper threw up a good defensive wall and forced the Black and Gold to attempt shots on net from far outside the penalty box. The Martlets finally broke through with 6 minutes to play in the game, when Taylor hammered home a shot from just outside the box past the Crimson Knight keeper (who, it must be said, played very well all afternoon and had several big saves). The final tally of 1-0 in favor of Westminster was satisfying, certainly, but the lads had to battle a game Salisbury side for 90 minutes. Keeper Parker Sinclair '23 came up big when needed, and posted the clean sheet. Game ball went to Henry Warner '25, whose play on the wing was tough and steady, particularly as he battles his way back from injury. The Wrench went to Monsee, who likewise had to play tough against a physical Salisbury midfield. Many thanks to Elizabeth Massie, mother of stalwart defender Theo Massie-Vereker '23, for the post-game snacks. This coach, for one, really needed the cider donut!
