Martlets Win on the Road

The Martlets traveled to Northampton this past Saturday to play against the Wildcats of Williston. Westminster took advantage of the beautiful fall day and came out strong with intensity and grit. From the start, the team dominated with their simple possession and attacking mindset. Within the first twenty minutes, the Martlets had many dangerous scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net, in part due to the gritty Wildcat backline. Finally, with twenty minutes on the clock, Westminster was able to get their first point on the board. Blessing Kieh ‘24 played a great ball up the field for Jillian Gregorski ‘24 to speed past the Wildcat defense on a breakaway. With composure, Gregorski placed a crisp ball into the corner of the net. Later in the half, Gregorski scored her second goal of the match off of a ball from Paige Smith ‘23. After receiving the ball from Elysse Cumberland ‘24, Smith took a great first touch toward the end line and played it across for Gregorski to finish. The Martlets entered the second half up 2-0 and would go on to score another two before the final whistle. Continuing to play quickly and to feet, the Martlets had many great moments of dominance in the second half of the game. With thirty-two minutes left on the clock, Williston took a dangerous corner kick which was cleared by the Martlet defense into the midfield. Haley Cramer ‘24 battled hard to win the loose ball in the midfield and played a great leading ball to Smith into the Williston half. On a breakaway, Smith dribbled all the way to the Wildcat net and placed the ball into the back of the net. The last goal of the match was from Kaitlyn McQueeney ‘24. Assisted by Gregorski on a leading ball past the Wildcat defense, McQueeney had a few great touches and scored on a breakaway. With this win, the Martlets are now 8-2. The team looks forward to having a productive Monday practice before their next game on Tuesday, October 18th versus Greenwich Academy. The game will be played at home at 3:30 pm.
