Martlets Win on the Road

Westminster made the short trip over to Windsor to play the Pelicans of Loomis Chaffee under the lights. Westminster started strong and once they adjusted to the pace of the turf, used quick passing sequences to find each other all over the field and move the ball into the attacking end. Olivia Gordon ’24 opened up the scoring in the first quarter when she got her stick on a rebound off of a penalty corner and buried the ball to the back of the cage. After more back and forth play, Westminster put the pressure on in the final minutes and looked to add to the score in the final second of the quarter, however the final whistle of the quarter sounded just as the ball crossed the line and the goal was called off. The next two quarters saw more back and forth play in the midfield as the determined Loomis squad continued to challenge the Martlets. Late in the third quarter, after a series of passes up field, Liv Fernandez ’23 sent a shot to net that the talented Loomis goalie saved. After a scramble in front, Fernandez got a handle of the ball and sent it far post to Olivia Emerson ’24 who was patiently waiting with her stick down ready to send it into the cage. Westminster regrouped during the final break heading into the fourth quarter knowing that the Loomis team would leave it all on the field looking to find a goal of their own. Loomis did just that on a well-executed penalty corner and brought the score to 2-1. The final minutes saw the same determination from Loomis as they worked to tie the game, however the Martlets stuck together and were able to finish on top 2-1. This was a great game by two gritty and talented teams. The Martlets fought until the finish and learned several things that they will take with them into a big three game week starting at home against Suffield on Monday afternoon.
