Martlets Defeat Choate

Westminster was right back at it today against Choate on what turned out to be a beautiful fall afternoon. The Martlets started strong and found the back of the cage midway through the first quarter when Liv Fernandez ‘23 buried the ball to the back of the cage with assists coming from McKenzie Bloom ‘23 and Lily Vincent ‘25. Bloom found the back of the cage on her own just four minutes later to add to the score. The Martlets continued to hold majority of the possession and had many great looks at the cage, however the Choate goalie made several impressive stops and their defensive efforts inside the circle disrupted many Martlet connections. Hadley Crowther ‘25 had an outstanding first half at right midfield, intercepting several Choate balls and distributing to the forward line to keep the momentum in the attacking end. The Martlets began the second half ready to take it up a notch and did just that as they controlled the play and added to the score when Fernandez deflected a shot that Bloom sent from the top of the circle after taking advantage of a quick restart inside the dotted. Choate was able to break through Westminster’s midfield a few times in the second half and saw several chances at the cage, however Cassie Goundrey ‘24 had a fantastic showing after a quiet first half and made several key stops to keep Westminster ahead. Choate snuck through with seven minutes remaining in the game to bring the game to 3-1, however the Martlets answered just three minutes later with Olivia Emerson ‘24 knocked in a pass after an outstanding effort from Olivia Gordon ‘24 to bring the final score to 4-1. Today’s win capped off a big 3 win week for Westminster and the team will return next week to continue the hard work and look to make some improvements before facing off against Miss Porter’s on Hovey Field next Wednesday.
