Martlets Defeat Deerfield

The girls moved to 2-0 with a 4-2 home win against Deerfield. Schuyler Groves ‘26 got the Martlets on the board in the 14th minute, getting behind the defense and onto a nice through ball and finishing with poise. Riley Vincent ‘23 doubled the lead in the 19th minute with a beautiful one-time shot from just outside of the box. The 2-0 lead held into the intermission, but not for long after play resumed, as Deerfield converted on a failed clearance to draw within one in the 46th minute. Just five minutes later, the lead was back to two after a virtual repeat of the Martlets’ first goal. Caroline Pokorny ‘26 sent Eliza Cabot ‘24 behind the Deerfield back line, and the speedy striker took full advantage of her opportunity. The visitors continued to apply pressure, so it was more than welcome when Colby Smith ‘24 provided some cushion in the 62nd minute. Ruthie Haims ‘22 dribbled out of the defensive end before sending Smith down the wing. After turning the corner, she took a hard shot that the goalie stopped but could not hold, whereupon Smith fought to regain possession before finding the open net. The Green served notice that the game would be contested through the final whistle, scoring again in the 70th minute on a beautiful hard cross that was stuffed home at the far post. Fortunately, the Martlet back line held firm for the remainder, led by the poise and positioning of Mather Thompson ‘23 at center back. Once again, Meiyin Ren ‘24 and Lily Raskind ‘24 split time in goal to earn the win. The girls will welcome the full week they have to get healthy before taking the field again at Kent.
