Martlets Defeat Deerfield

The Westminster Girls' Varsity Soccer team played against Deerfield at home this Wednesday afternoon. Ready to go at the blow of the first whistle, the Martlets were eager in their attack and found multiple goal-scoring opportunities. Just three minutes into the half, Elysse Cumberland ‘24 received the ball on the right side of the field, picked her head up, and found Mia Fluckiger ‘26 in the box. Mia was quick to receive the pass, turn on the defender marking her, dribble end line, and find Catherine Graves ‘24 for the finish. The Martlets kept their composure and maintained their energy. Looking to play with speed and with one - and two-touches, the team dominated for the majority of the first half. With 18:50 on the clock, center back Bianca D’Onofrio ‘23 was gritty in her defense and won the ball from a Deerfield attacker. She dribbled out of the Martlet’s half and into the attacking third of the field. After the ball bounced back and forth between the Martlets and the Big Green, Jillian Gregorski ‘24 found D’Onofrio. After a great two touches outside the 18, D’Onofrio sailed the ball past the hands of the Deerfield keeper and into the back of the net. Around four minutes later, the Martlets set up for a corner. Kaitlyn McQueeney ‘24 played a fantastic ball into the box for Gregorski to head in. Westminster entered the second half up 3-0, but Deerfield was not ready to give up the battle. Just four minutes into the half,  Deerfield dribbled up the left side of the field and played the ball into the box for the finish. The score remained 3-1 until the final whistle. With this win, the Martlets are now 2-0. The team will travel to Wilbraham to take on Wilbraham and Monson Academy this Saturday, Sept. 24th, at 2:30 pm. Let’s go Martlets!
