Martlets Roll in Season Opener

This Saturday, the Westminster Girls’ Varsity Soccer team opened up their 2022 season at home against the Hoggers of Northfield Mount Hermon. From the beginning of the match, the Martlets dominated possession and had multiple opportunities on net. Less than ten minutes in, Mia Fluckiger ‘26 played a solid through ball into the box for Jillian Gregorski ‘24 who then ripped a shot on goal. While the Hogger goalie was able to block Gregorski’s shot, the ball rebounded off her hands and onto the feet of Catherine Graves ‘24 who finished it one touch into the back of the net. The one goal on the scoreboard quickly became two when Elysse Cumberland ‘24 crossed the ball into the box to Graves who laid it off for Kaitlyn McQueeney ‘24 to bury into the Hogger net. Two minutes later, at the 25th-minute mark, Gregorski took a shot that hit the far left post and was capitalized on by Fluckiger in her first official goal as a Martlet! Later on in the first half, outside back Mia Davis ‘24 got forward and threw in a ball to Gregorski. Gregorski was quick to shield a defender, turn, take a touch and finish the ball for the fourth goal of the match. A minute later, Cumberland made a fantastic effort to get the ball into the box for her teammates and it eventually found its way to Blessing Kieh ‘24 at the top of the 18. Kieh then ripped a fantastic shot on frame for her first goal of the season. In the second half, the Martlets were able to score an additional four more goals. A little over ten minutes into the half, McQueeney played a crisp through ball for Gregorski who then scored her second goal of the game. Shortly after, Fluckiger battled her way through the Hogger defense and also scored her second of the match. With 26 minutes remaining, Cumberland was once again able to find teammate Graves for the finish. The final goal came with sixteen minutes left in the game. Paige Smith ‘23 played a nice through ball to Graves who then found Gabby Haughton ‘23. Haughton then returned the ball to Graves who sailed a shot over the hands of the Hogger keeper. A true team effort, the Martlets played with plenty of grit and grace and earned their first win of the season. The team looks forward to their next home game this Wednesday, September 21st, against Deerfield Academy at 3:30 pm
