Martlets Open the Season with a Win

The Martlets made the short trip up to Suffield on a steamy opening day of the season. Westminster struggled out of the gates on the smaller size field and faster old style turf. Suffield was able to capitalize early in the first half off a well placed cross on a corner kick. The Martlets were able to right the ship and score a few minutes later when new coming Jan Wechsler ‘22 would hammer home a tight shot. Quickly soon after, Westminster would get on the board again when another newcomer Justin Lee ‘23 would knock home a pass from Lawrence Taylor ‘23, Taylor would finish with two key assists on the day. Late in the first half, Boniface Fatohou’23 would bend home a free kick with his left foot from 20 yards out off the post on a direct kick. Leading 3-1 at the half the Martlets felt good but knew they needed to clean up some of the loose ball play in the middle of the field. Second half got off to a good start when Wechsler would get his second of the game, however he celebrated to the wrong camera of the Millbrook girls varsity team, a common rookie mistake. The scoring wrapped up with Lee converting on a well placed PK late in the half. Senior captain John Picard ’22 worked extremely hard in the midfield to compliment fellow center midfielder Taylor. New keeper Ronaldo Fatolou ‘24 had a relatively slow day making saves but was called upon several times to come out and get balls and crosses. Huge thank you to all the families that brought water, gatorades, donuts and snacks on such a hot day. The team looks to have a few good days of practice before heading to Taft for a midweek tilt.
