Season Opens with a Win

The Martlets made the short trip across town to Ethel Walker to open up the long awaited 2021 season. Ready to compete after two weeks of pushing the pace in practice, the Martlets exploded upon hearing the first whistle and worked tirelessly to keep the ball in the offensive half of the field. After a few early attempts at the cage were stopped by the talented Ethel Walker goalie, Olivia Fernandez ‘23 found the ball on her stick at the stroke line and was able to find the back of the cage her first varsity goal. Westminster continued to show strong passing connections down the field and earned several offensive corners that were turned aside by the gritty Ethel Walker defensive unit. Entering the second half determined to finish on their chances, the Martlets immediately moved the ball down field with several players getting a touch on the ball before Bennett Ghriskey ‘22 corralled a loose ball in front and tapped it home to make it 2-0 Westminster. The determined Ethel Walker squad answered right back after capitalizing on a few Martlet mistakes to bring the score to 2-1, but the midfield line of Margaret Sadak ‘22, Dylan Bloom ‘23, and Margaret Kennedy ‘22 did a fantastic job controlling loose balls in the middle of the field and distributing the ball to teammates in the final minutes of the game to keep the score at 2-1. Cassie Goundrey ‘ 24 made four saves in her first Westminster game in the cage. The Martlets are excited to get back to work in preparation for their home opener next Saturday against NMH.
