Martlets Fall in Opener

The fourth season in Hibbard Pool opened with the Martlets facing the New Haven Hydras. With many new faces in the water, and players hungry for their first taste of water polo, the energy was high in the pool. The Martlets had a few early chances, but the excellent play of the Hydras’s goaltender prevented an early lead for the home team. The Hydras struck first, but the Martlets equalled the score early in the first quarter. The first quarter ended with the Hydras scoring two more, making the score 3-1 heading into the second quarter. The second quarter saw the Hydras seize momentum and pull away from the Martlets. Westminster earned several opportunities in close, but they were unable to keep the score within reach as the Hydras pulled away. The Martlets remained steady, and harnessed more energy, scoring some goals in the fourth quarter, and inching closer to the Hydras. While the result, 16-9 in favor of the Hydras, was not what the Martlets were hoping for, the experience in the water was thrilling, and each player learned valuable skills they will utilize in their upcoming match against Williston Northampton on Wednesday. Keegan Bankoff ‘22 was excellent in net, and goals were earned by many players for Westminster. The Martlets will reboot for Wednesday when they travel north.
