Sign-In Ceremony Officially Welcomes New Students

Students new to Westminster signed the book signifying their formal entrance into school Oct. 14 in a ceremony on Keyes Porch. One by one, they signed the large book holding the names of countless Westminster students as Third Form Dean Grant Gritzmacher, Fourth Form Dean Paul Kendall and Head of School Bill Philip looked on. Members of the Prefect Board were also present.

Due to campus social distancing requirements, the event, which has a long tradition at Westminster, could not be held as usual earlier in the academic year in Andrews Memorial Chapel or include handshaking with the head of school and members of the Prefect Board.

After signing the book this year, new students gathered socially distanced on Commencement Lawn to get better acquainted with each other through a Form activity Martlets like to call “speed dating.” Students stood in two lines facing each other and had 45 seconds to select from a list of questions including asking about their name and such things as their spirit animal, where they are from, their favorite food in the dining hall, their favorite TV show and their favorite type of music. Following a brief interlude, a whistle sounded to indicate that it was time for the lines to move and new pairs to converse. After the lively discussions finished, members of both the Third and Fourth Forms enjoyed pizza served by the Prefect Board.
