Tight Game Against Berkshire

Westminster faced a tough Berkshire team Saturday evening at Jackson rink. The game served as the senior night for the four graduating Sixth Formers: Taylor Adams, Jenny Guider, Abby Munger and Megan Rittenhouse. These four have been together since Third Form year and have been a big reason for the growth of this team this season. The first 10 minutes of the first period were even as Berkshire tried to get ahead early. Thankfully, Westminster goalie Mandy Busky ’21 didn't give them any second chances. Then at the five-minute mark, Emma Gurnell '21 stole the puck and then got tripped as she broke to the net. The Martlets took to the power play and after solid possession and crisp stick-to-stick passes, Sam DeLeo '21 moved the puck from the top over to Abby Munger '20 on the half-wall. Munger sent a low hard shot on net and Megan Rittenhouse '20 slid to the front for a tip that beat the Berkshire goalie. This was an important goal in a high pressure situation as it would maintain a thin lead for the remainder of the game. Westminster controlled the play for parts of the second period, but the Berkshire goalie was outstanding and shut down the Martlet forwards. Determined play by Adams and Casey Winslow ’21 on a penalty kill gave Westminster the momentum necessary to secure the lead and end with the win. It was a close game, but one that demonstrated the focus and commitment of the players. It was good preparation as the team rallies for the final week of the season.
