Students Assume Leadership Roles at Model U.N. Conference

Students in Westminster’s Model U.N. program attended the Connecticut World Affairs Council Model U.N. (CTWAC) conference Dec. 6-7 at the University of Hartford. Thirty-five Martlets attended, the largest group to participate in a Model U.N. conference to date. The students debated topics from plastic pollution to human trafficking to the opioid crisis.

Four Westminster students served as officers in their committees. Daniel Pinckney ’20 and Olivia Zhang ’20 were chairs of their committees, and Sung Min Cho ’22 and Hudson Stedman ’21 served as moderators. The four officers participated in two additional training sessions to hone their skills and knowledge of parliamentary procedure.

In addition, for the first time ever, a Westminster student was chosen as president of the entire conference. Olivia Zhang presided over the meeting of more than 1,000 students and 30 schools that included giving speeches opening and closing the ceremonies. “She was confident and inspiring in her delivery,” said Betsy Heckman Westminster’ Model U.N. advisor and head of the Westminster History Department. “It was an impressive achievement and performance.”

The weekend provided critical experience for new and veteran members of Westminster’s Model U.N. program in anticipation of the more intense Yale Model U.N. (YMUN) conference that will occur in January. “Students were enthusiastic about the CTWAC conference and are eager to begin preparing for YMUN,” added Betsy.
