Martlets Top Bears in Final Game of Season

Westminster First Girls' Lacrosse turned in a fine 50 minutes of lacrosse May 22 for the final game of the 2019 season. The Martlets not only played a full 50 minutes, but it was a team win with strong contributions from many of the players. Westminster found itself on defense first after a Berkshire Bear draw control to start that game that ultimately led to a goal. The Martlets battled back, however, and scored three to take the lead. The Bears did not let up, however, and kept the score close to the half. At half, the score was 7-6 favoring Westminster, but the draw controls directly correlated to the goals for both teams which meant that the team who won the next draw control would likely score. And just like that, at the start of the second half, Berkshire won the draw and scored. Again, though, Westminster answered back with eight goals of its own off eight more draw controls. The Bears tried to chip away at this lead, but Westminster kept the pressure on and, thanks to a big save late in the second half by goalie Ellie Bailey '21, Westminster stayed on top and finished the game with the 17-11 win. Westminster's goal scorers included Sam DeLeo '21 (4g, 1a), Georgia Nolan '20 (4g), Casey Winslow '21 (3g), captain Blake Cote '19 (2g, 1a), Shannon Keefe '19 (2g), Ridgely Green '20 (1g, 1a) and captain Georgia Swank '19 (1g). Strong defending from Bailey, captain Susie Renehan '19 and Meg Rittenhouse '20 kept the Bears fluid attack in check. The 2019 Westminster First Girls' Lacrosse squad will always be a special one — with each practice and game, the team stepped on and left the field together, with grit and grace. The coaches are particularly proud of the way this team handled adversity and how team members simply never quit. And thank you to the Class of 2019, whose shoes will be quite hard to fill: Blake Cote, Shannon Keefe, Jill Parsons, Susie Renehan and Georgia Swank.
