Martlets Show Resilience in Extra Inning Comeback Win

Alayna Tawney '19 had three hits and drove in five runs to lead Westminster to a 12-11 win over Taft in extra innings. The Martlets were trailing by three runs in the seventh frame, but battled back to tie the game. Bethany Winters '20 drew a walk, and Callista Adorno '22 and Mandy Busky '21 singled. Gabby Nemarich '20 then drove in two runs with a double. Abby Munger '20 followed with a sharply hit ground ball which scored the tying run. In the ninth inning of a 10-10 game, Adorno walked and Busky was hit by a pitch. Munger moved both runners up with a ground ball to third base. Tawney then singled, driving in two runs. In the bottom of the ninth, Abby Davis '20 made an important catch in deep right field, and Nemarich also had a nice play at shortstop. But, the Rhinos kept charging and scored a run. With two outs and runners on second and third, Adorno fielded a ground ball and the Martlets held on for an exciting 12-11 victory. In addition to the strong batting by Tawney and Adorno (three hits apiece), Busky, Munger, Nemarich, Winters and Hailey Tullo '22 each had two base hits. Busky caught a terrific game and Tullo was flawless at first base. Allie Masthay '21 (third base) and Winters (second base) each had four put outs in the field. Adorno showed grit on the mound by holding a talented Taft lineup to just one run over the last four innings.
