April 10: Golf - First Girls’ 0 vs Loomis Chaffee 5
The Martlets hosted down south power, Greenwich Academy, and the defending 2018 New England Champions, Loomis Pelicans, in another early season match. Both opponents lived up to their respective hype, and Westminster worked hard to compete and to improve during the course of a windy and cool afternoon at Hop Meadow. The course played well, and each Westminster player had her moments as the team searches for greater collective consistency. Susie Mahoney '20, Eve Cathcart '20, Ishika Nathan '19, Ellie Cramer '22 and Elisabeth Knauf '20 had "no quit" in their efforts and played hard and competitively until the end.

April 13: Golf - First Girls’ 0 vs Taft School 5
April 13: Golf - First Girls’ 1 vs Williston Northampton School 4
It was a beautiful day for golf April 13 and the girls came ready to give their best. The Taft track was a bit wet from the overnight downpour making the turf very soft. Susie Mahoney '20 managed to best Williston but was defeated by her Taft opponent playing on her home course. Ishika Nathan '19 had a slow start but fought hard and came within one hole against Taft, but was unable to eke out the win. Eve Cathcart '20 had a respectable round and also came within one hole of besting her Taft opponent. Ellie Cramer '22 gave it her all and earned lots of experience in the number four position. All in all, for the third match of the season, it was a solid showing.

On a chilly (mid 40s) and very breezy day at Suffield Country Club, First Boys' Golf put together a solid score of 194 to come away with victories over Suffield (204) and Wilbraham & Monson (230). Peyton Knauf '19 led the way for the Martlets with a score of 36 (even par) to earn match medalist honors. Other Westminster scores included Ned Blanchard '20 (37), Bennett Ostern '21 (39), Justin Flaks '20 (40), Vincent von Nordeck '21 (42) and Peter Sanger '21 (43).

April 13: Golf - First Boys’ 206 vs Kent School 231
First Boys' Golf struggled to find its "A" game under perfect conditions at Wyantenuck Country Club, but the team was still able to post a respectable score of 206 to come away with victories over Kent (231) and Berkshire (234). Justin Flaks '20 led the way for the Martlets with an impressive score of 37 (+1) to earn match medalist honors by four shots. Other Westminster scores included Peyton Knauf '19 (41), Bennett Ostern '21 (41), Ned Blanchard '20 (43), Peter Sanger '21 (44) and Charlie von Stade '21 (46). The two victories bring the team's season record to 7-0.

Martlets Open Season with a Win
Though the azaleas are not yet in bloom on a fine early spring Saturday at Hartford's historic Keney Park, Second Boys’ Golf sextet all played as if a green jacket was on the line. Newt Cutler '22 led the way with an impressive 1-over 36, which included a long, snaking birdie putt on the fourth hole's tricky green (the aptly named "Klondyke"). Equally impressive was Cutler's up-and-down on the last, when he short-sided his approach shot but recovered nicely to about 6 feet and calmly stroked the par-saver home. Cutler was not the only Martlet to go low on the day: David Harris '21 played his usual down-the-middle game to post a 37 and Carson Roth '19 gritted his way to a 39. Other scores were Darion Benchich '20 and Wes Oltsch '20, both in at 45, and Vincent von Nordeck '21 with a 46. The team's 202 total was an impressive start to the season.

Lacrosse - First Girls'
April 10: Lacrosse - First Girls’ 6 vs Sacred Heart 18
The Martlets of First Girls’ Lacrosse traveled to Greenwich to take on a very talented Sacred Heart squad. The home team got on the board first with two goals in the first two minutes, but Westminster answered with goals by midfielders Georgia Nolan ‘20 and Sam DeLeo ‘21. Sacred Heart then went on a seven-goal run thanks to its strong transitions and fast breaks down the middle of the Martlet defensive end. Westminster did not let down and put two more in the back of the home team’s net to lessen the deficit to five. Unfortunately, halftime put a pause on their momentum and the home team picked it back up and went on another five-goal run. Westminster worked hard on the draws and in causing turnovers in the defensive end, but it was just not quite enough to stop the speed of Sacred Heart. Shannon Keefe ‘19, Jill Parsons ‘19, Blake Cote ‘19 and DeLeo picked up one goal and Nolan put two in the back of the net.

April 13: Lacrosse - First Girls’ 16 vs Pomfret School 10
With temperatures in the 70s and full sun for the first time this season, it was a true spring day as Westminster First Girls’ Lacrosse hit the road again, this time to take on Pomfret. The Martlets scored first, but Pomfret stayed in play trailing by only a few goals throughout the first half. After a four-goal run, however, Westminster began to kick it in to put the team up 8-3 at the half. A five-goal differential is not a comfortable lead in lacrosse and Pomfret came into the second half ready to take control of the game as it began to chip away at the Westminster lead. The Martlets found a way to raise the level of their pass accuracy, defensive crashes and shot placement to solidify the 16-10 win late in the second half with notable showings from captain defender Georgia Swank ‘19, defender Jenny Guider ‘20 and attacker Ridgely Green ‘20.

April 10: Lacrosse - First Boys’ 8 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 12
The Wild Boars of Choate Rosemary Hall traveled up I-91 for an April 10 matchup against Westminster. The Wild Boars came charging out of the gate, and put the Martlets into a deep hole early in the game. Westminster had trouble matching the emotion and energy of the visiting team early in the game, but found its footing later. Unfortunately, the early lead that Choate opened up proved too much to overtake in the second half. Westminster put forth a good effort in the second half, but ended up with too little too late.

April 13: Lacrosse - First Boys’ 13 vs Taft School 11
On another beautiful spring day, the Taft Rhinos visited Williams Hill to take on First Boys’ Lacrosse on Hovey Field. Westminster struck first on a goal from Jayce Lambert '19 and Jeremy Hopsicker '22 quickly followed with the Martlets second goal. Westminster came out of the gate strong, notching six first-quarter goals to Taft's four. The Martlets tallied two more goals in the second quarter, and took an 8-5 lead into halftime. Taft responded in the second half, closing the gap to one late in the game, but Westminster was able to secure possession at the end of the game and finish with the 13-11 victory. An Honorable Mention Game Ball went out to Jordie McKenna '19 for his work in breaking Taft's 10-man clear, and Game Balls went to Lambert and Hopsicker for their work in the offensive end, and also to Souley Ballo '19 for his work in the defensive end containing one of Taft's top threats all game.

Lacrosse - Second Girls'
April 13: Lacrosse - Second Girls’ 6 vs Pomfret School 5
Second Girls' Lacrosse traveled to the far corner of Connecticut to take on the Griffins of Pomfret. The Griffins scored two quick goals before the Martlets began to control the play in the midfield. Celia Sotirhos '21 got the scoring started for the Martlets as she buried a nice feed from Halli Keenan '21. Lucy Jones '21 evened the score off a free position shot. The Martlet offense was beginning to find its footing. The Martlets and Griffins traded goals until halftime as Olivia Goldstuck '21 and Wheatley Sutro '22 each scored. After a quick halftime regroup, the Martlets controlled most of the second half and pulled ahead with goals from Keenan and Lauren Valenti '22. The Griffins pulled within one goal late in the game but couldn't tie it up as the clock ran out.

Lacrosse - Second Boys'
April 10: Lacrosse - Second Boys’ 22 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 4
On a beautiful afternoon, the Martlets were able to fire on all cylinders against the Boars of Choate. Westminster scored from the beginning and almost everyone on offense was able to get in on the scoresheet. Even the defense got involved, with four combined assists from long-poles.

April 12: Lacrosse - Second Boys’ 3 vs Avon Old Farms School 6
The Martlets rolled down the street to Avon to take on their rival on a cold and cloudy Friday afternoon. Westminster, playing without five players due to illness, started out slow and was unable to recover. Walker Jones ‘20 was able to put in a goal before halftime, but the Martlets were unable to overcome several mental mistakes in the second half. Before it was over, Matthew Westlake ‘22 and Jones had put two more goals in the net, but the team could not rebound.

April 13: Lacrosse - Second Boys’ 10 vs Taft School 11
On a stunning Saturday afternoon in Simsbury, the Martlets looked to return to form against the Rhinos of Taft. Jordy Nelson '21 scored 10 seconds in to get the game going, and both teams began to find their offensive forms. Over the course of the afternoon, no team ever led by more than three goals at any point. It was a back-and-forth game with many opportunities. By the end, Nelson had put in another goal, along with Grant Pietri '22, Walker Jones '20, Jack Roberts '20, Quinn Plumb '21, Charlie Flam '20 and Teddy Schellbach also had a hat trick. The Martlets were shorthanded once again due to quite a few illnesses, but Ben Ferrell '21 was once again phenomenal in net. Ferrell provided his second 15-plus save game in a row to keep the Martlets in it until the end. After failing to convert a few last-minute chances, the Martlets graciously conceded defeat.

Lacrosse - Third Girls'
April 10: Lacrosse - Third Girls’ 3 vs Rumsey Hall School 8
The Martlets were excited to hit the road and challenge a talented Rumsey Hall squad on a sunny spring afternoon. Despite falling 4-0 early in the first half, the Martlets continued to battle and began to slow down the Blue Dogs with some help from several big saves by Rachel Ha '21 in net. Katherine Ashe '21 and Campbell Swift '21 teamed up to cause several turnovers in the defensive end, while Michaela Crabtree-Crowley '22 took it upon herself to transition the ball down field and help generate the offense. After trailing 5-1 at the half, Westminster turned it on in the second half and was able to maintain possession in the offensive end. Shelby Oken '22 and Arin Goldberg '22 did a great job moving the ball while India Lalor '21 and Annabelle Smith '21 contributed all over the field throughout the afternoon. Abby Moss '20, Gemma Green '21 and Lalor each had a goal and Ha finished the day with nine saves in net.

Lacrosse - Third Boys'
April 12: Lacrosse - Third Boys’ 9 vs Avon Old Farms School 6
Westminster Thirds opened its season April 12 against Avon Old Farms. The Martlets went up early and were able to hold Avon at arm's length the rest of the way, as the boys possessed the ball well and came up with seemingly every ground ball. On the defensive end, Beck Winsor '21, Justin Parson '20 and Cooper Organ '21 held down the fort with high energy throughout the game that made it difficult for the Avon offense to sustain much of anything. Notable leadership efforts on the offensive end go to Alex Tonioni '22, Hunter Hoogkamp '21, Nate Swift '19 and Tarek Mourad '19. However, the game ball could've been awarded to none other than Juan Jo Garibay '20, who made his first start in net and did more than hold his own.

Softball - First Girls'
April 10: Softball - First Girls’ 3 vs Suffield Academy 7
The Martlets fell short in their first game, but showed signs of the potential that exists for this young team. Callista Adorno '22 pitched well against some talented Suffield batters, allowing just eight hits. Mandy Busky '21 stepped in to catch for injured captain Meg Cournoyer '19 and caught a fine game. Allie Masthay '21 deterred the opposing team from bunting by recording numerous outs at third base. Adorno and Bethany Winters '20 fielded their positions well, successfully fielding every ball hit to them. Alayna Tawney '19 and Allison Kijanka '20 each made important catches in the outfield, and Hailey Tullo '22 played well at first base. Suffield jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning, but Westminster battled back in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 5-3 ballgame. The Martlets had base runners in the last two frames, but were unable to get the timely hit. However, Adorno and Busky led the Black and Gold with two hits apiece. Gabby Nemarich '20, Tawney and Winters each had singles. Overall, the team has much work to do, but they’re playing with spirit and determination.

April 13: Softball - First Girls’ 2 vs Kent School 1
Westminster scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning against a fine Kent team to edge the Lions 2-1. The game was an outstanding pitchers’ duel between Westminster’s Callista Adorno '22 and Teagan Graham of Kent. Adorno allowed only three Kent singles, and the Martlets managed just four hits on the day. Westminster had solid fielding throughout the contest. Mandy Busky '21 caught a strong game, Allie Masthay '21 had two nice plays at third base, Gabby Nemarich '20 was efficient at shortstop and Hailey Tullo '22 was sure handed at first base. Alayna Tawney '19 and Bethany Winters '20 each made important catches to help secure the victory. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Kent's Gia Marie Orsino singled to drive in a run. In the sixth inning, Westminster answered with an exciting two out rally. Adorno placed a perfect bunt and advanced to third base on a throwing error. Busky then singled to tie the game at 1-1. Nemarich followed by driving a triple to centerfield, and the Martlets had a 2-1 lead. In the top of the seventh frame, Kent had the tying run on third base but Nemarich made a nice play on a hard-hit ground ball to end the game.

Tennis - First Girls'
April 10: Tennis - First Girls’ 1 vs Deerfield Academy 8
The Martlets hosted Deerfield in what is always a hotly-contested match-up. This year's edition did not disappoint. While the Black and Gold struggled in the opening doubles matches, they challenged the Doors at multiple spots on the singles ladder. Ellie Suit '20 and Clara Ekholm '20 got down early at No. 1 doubles but did not quit and staged a comeback before ultimately falling 8-4. At No. 3 doubles, Olivia Zhang '20 and Diana Tsibikova '21 improved in their second match of the season, looking sharper and more aggressive at net, despite losing 8-3. In singles play, Lauren Way '20 got out to an early lead at No. 2 but eventually had her serve broken and fell to her opponent 10-7. Placing her shots with precision accuracy, Ekholm had the lone win at No. 5 singles, holding on to beat DA 10-8. The final match of the day was the closest at No. 4 singles. Suit exchanged games with her athletic and hard-hitting opponent throughout the 10-game pro set. Down 10-9, Suit did not quit and tied the match to push it into a tiebreaker. Ultimately, her opponent played more cleanly and convincingly to get the win. The Martlets persevered in this match and played with "Grit and Grace" from beginning to end, something they should definitely be proud of.

April 13: Tennis - First Girls’ 9 vs Ethel Walker School 0
A new addition to their schedule, the Martlets hosted neighbor Ethel Walker on a beautiful spring day. Down a couple of players due to college visits, the home team had only six players, but that is all they needed to get their first win on the season. The Black and Gold looked strong in both singles and doubles play, not dropping a set on the day. Of note, Sasha van Vredenburch '21 and Diana Tsibikova ’21 grabbed their first wins on the varsity squad. The two teamed up at No. 3 doubles and also each won their singles match. Lauren Way '20 at No. 1 and Clara Ekholm '20 at #3 were dominant from beginning to end in their matches. At #2, Ellie Suit '20 matched a hard-hitting opponent with power and placement of her own in her 6-2, 6-2 win. Finally, Alex Wolf '19 did a nice job of using the entire court to dispatch her opponent 6-1, 6-0.

April 10: Tennis - First Boys’ 2 vs Salisbury School 5
Westminster traveled to Salisbury April 10 to face a talented Crimson Knights team. Despite the talent at the top of the ladder, Westminster nearly took home the win. After dropping the doubles point quickly, Westminster rebounded, led by Ethan Na's ’19 straight set victory at No. 2. Unfortunately, Grant McCargo '21, Carl Ekholm '19 and Nate Chaves '19 would all drop third set super tiebreakers which put the match away for hosts. Ekholm fought valiantly despite injuring his shoulder in the second set. Scoobi Wilson '19 would earn his first win at the varsity level at No. 6 singles

April 13: Tennis - First Boys’ 4 vs Pomfret School 3
It was a beautiful day when the boys traveled to Pomfret, but with another match occurring at the same time, most of the action took place on the indoor courts. Things started well as the doubles point was secured on the strength of wins by Azat Mukhametkulov '19 and Carl Ekholm '19 at No.1 (8-5) and Ethan Na '19 and Grant McCargo '21 at No. 2 (8-3). Na, Ekholm and McCargo followed up and sealed the team win with straight set wins in singles at Nos. 2 (6-1, 7-6), 3 (6-1, 6-2) and 4 (6-4, 6-0), respectively. Pomfret took the remaining singles matches, but Scoobi Wilson '19 at No. 5, Scott Lee '20 at No. 6 and Keegan Bankoff '22 in exhibition all took their opponents to super tiebreakers.

April 10: Tennis - Second Boys’ 6 vs Kent School 1
Westminster had a great team effort, winning eight of nine scoring matches, and most handily. The team got off to a great start as it swept the doubles matches to earn a quick point. Mac Dye '20 and Charlie Crowther '21 took the No. 1 match 8-3; Eddie Shin '21 and John Clofine '21 dominated the No. 2 contest at 8-1, and the Fifth Form tandem of Jake Monroe and Matt Lewin won 8-2. Westminster stayed hot and won five of six singles matches. Crowther took a commanding lead in the No. 1 match and hung on in the second set to win 6-1, 6-4. Shin teed off on second serves and won 6-3, 6-3. Dye used a strong first serve and a brutal change-of-pace cut backhand to win 6-4, 6-1. Monroe outlasted his opponent to win in straight sets in a match that saw many points last for 20 or 30 strokes. Lewin, featuring a strong net game, battled back from a disappointing first-set tiebreaker loss to win 5-7, 6-1, (10-7).

April 13: Tennis - Second Boys’ 2 vs Pomfret School 5
Westminster lost a close and hard-fought match against a solid Pomfret squad. The team got off to a good start as Jake Monroe '20, Matt Lewin '20, John Clofine '21 and Eddie Shin '21 won their respective doubles matches to garner a point. The singles matches didn't go nearly as well. Though several matches were close and competitive, Monroe was the only Martlet to reign victorious, as he won his match handily, 8-0.

Tennis - Third Girls'
April 9: Tennis - Third Girls’ 1 vs Rumsey Hall School 8
Ten intrepid Third Girls players traveled to Rumsey Hall April, 9, hoping that the rain would hold off and their outdoor courts would be playable. Unfortunately, the rain did not hold off and all nine matches were played on the three indoor courts. However, everyone had a rapt audience and the matches were really fun to watch from a high perch. Starting off the day were the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles of Alex Buerck '21, Izzy Bailey '21 and Annie Brewer '21 respectively. Brewer came away with the only win on the day, with a 6-3 defeat of her opponent. However, both Buerck and Bailey played outstanding matches with great points played out. Then the No. 1, 2 and 3 singles took to the courts. These were new Westminster players Kristina Oganyan '22, Olivia Olney '22 and Sofia Daniele '22. All three girls played against talented opponents with strong serves. Olney in particular had a very exciting match. Olney's six game pro-set match lasted over an hour and many points went to deuce (sometimes many times). Taking the courts last were Brewer and Buerck at No. 1 doubles. They had the closest doubles match, with Brewer playing well at the net and Buerck holding strong in the backcourt. Playing in her first Westminster match at No. 2 doubles was Jenna Kosior '21 with seasoned partner Chloe Ferro '20. Also playing in her first match as a Martlet at No. 3 doubles was Shui Se Phoe '21, playing with veteran Elena McGuigan '21. After being at Rumsey for over two hours, the last match was called early which allowed Westminster players to get back on the road.

Tennis - Third Boys'
April 10: Tennis - Third Boys' vs Salisbury School
Thirds Boys' Tennis played a competitive Salisbury club at home April 10. The team was led by No. 1 Ian Shane '20, as he dominated in both his doubles and singles matches. Out of all of the matches the Martlets only lost one set on the day. Every doubles team won convincingly and every singles matchup was in favor of the Martlets outside of one match. Ben Husiman '20, Mike Wade '19, Alec Paro '19, Shane Walhberg '19 and Will Gilson '20 all played very well against Salisbury.

April 12: Tennis - Third Boys’ vs Eaglebrook School
The Martlets traveled north of Route 91 to face a good Eaglebrook squad. The Martlets fought hard throughout the afternoon but the other team seemed to have a nice groove. In the end, the Martlets won one doubles match. The Martlets are now 2-1 on the season and the team looks forward to next week. It was a great effort on both ends.
