Good Effort in Opening Day Loss to Suffield

The Martlets fell short in their first game, but showed signs of the potential that exists for this young team. Callista Adorno '22 pitched well against some talented Suffield batters, allowing just eight hits. Mandy Busky '21 stepped in to catch for injured captain Meg Cournoyer '19 and caught a fine game. Allie Masthay '21 deterred the opposing team from bunting by recording numerous outs at third base. Adorno and Bethany Winters '20 fielded their positions well, successfully fielding every ball hit to them. Alayna Tawney '19 and Allison Kijanka '20 each made important catches in the outfield, and Hailey Tullo '22 played well at first base. Suffield jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning, but Westminster battled back in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 5-3 ballgame. The Martlets had base runners in the last two frames, but were unable to get the timely hit. However, Adorno and Busky led the Black and Gold with two hits apiece. Gabby Nemarich '20, Tawney and Winters each had singles. Overall, the team has much work to do, but they’re playing with spirit and determination.
