Martlets Open Season with a Win

Though the azaleas are not yet in bloom on a fine early spring Saturday at Hartford's historic Keney Park, Second Boys’ Golf sextet all played as if a green jacket was on the line. Newt Cutler '22 led the way with an impressive 1-over 36, which included a long, snaking birdie putt on the fourth hole's tricky green (the aptly named "Klondyke"). Equally impressive was Cutler's up-and-down on the last, when he short-sided his approach shot but recovered nicely to about 6 feet and calmly stroked the par-saver home. Cutler was not the only Martlet to go low on the day: David Harris '21 played his usual down-the-middle game to post a 37 and Carson Roth '19 gritted his way to a 39. Other scores were Darion Benchich '20 and Wes Oltsch '20, both in at 45, and Vincent von Nordeck '21 with a 46. The team's 202 total was an impressive start to the season, which it will look to build on this coming Wednesday when it hosts Salisbury and Wilbraham & Monson at home at Hop Meadow Country Club.
