Martlets Fight to the Last Game

The Martlets hosted Deerfield in what is always a hotly-contested match-up. This year's edition did not disappoint. While the Black and Gold struggled in the opening doubles matches, they challenged the Doors at multiple spots on the singles ladder. Ellie Suit '20 and Clara Ekholm '20 got down early at No. 1 doubles but did not quit and staged a comeback before ultimately falling 8-4. At No. 3 doubles, Olivia Zhang '20 and Diana Tsibikova '21 improved in their second match of the season, looking sharper and more aggressive at net, despite losing 8-3. In singles play, Lauren Way '20 got out to an early lead at No. 2 but eventually had her serve broken and fell to her opponent 10-7. Placing her shots with precision accuracy, Ekholm had the lone win at No. 5 singles, holding on to beat DA 10-8. The final match of the day was the closest at No. 4 singles. Suit exchanged games with her athletic and hard-hitting opponent throughout the 10-game pro set. Down 10-9, Suit did not quit and tied the match to push it into a tiebreaker. Ultimately, her opponent played more cleanly and convincingly to get the win. The Martlets persevered in this match and played with "Grit and Grace" from beginning to end, something they should definitely be proud of. The Martlets will have another home match on Saturday when Simsbury neighbor Ethel Walker pays a visit.
