Westminster Beats Middlesex in Season Opener

The Martlets of Westminster First Girls’ Lacrosse traveled to Concord, Mass. to take on the talented Middlesex squad. After a sloppy start on both ends, the teams settled in to play. Middlesex got on the board first three minutes into the game and scored again minutes later. Westminster then scored three goals of its own to take the lead, which it kept the entire game. The teams broke for half with a score of 5-3 favoring the Martlets. Despite winning the first draw of the second half, Westminster took a little bit of time to get back in its groove after half-time and Middlesex lessened its deficit to just one. Westminster remained disciplined and came up with important draw controls thanks to Sam DeLeo ‘21 and captain Blake Cote ‘19. Ellie Bailey ‘21 came up with big saves, especially late in the second half to keep the Martlets ahead and Meg Rittenhouse ‘20 was key in causing turnovers in the defensive end. Shannon Keefe ‘19, Georgia Nolan ‘20, DeLeo and Cote each tallied a goal and Ridgely Green ‘20 notched four in the back of the net. The Martlets won 8-6 and are looking forward to the rest of the season after this strong start.
