Girls Smash Two School Records In Best Finish Ever

The Westminster girls put an exclamation point on a fantastic season by placing third at the New England Championships at Wesleyan March 2, the team's highest finish yet since the meet's inception in 2012. After a morning session full of lifetime best times, the girls returned to finals in the evening with a collective will and determination to put an exclamation point on a banner season. The finals began with a fifth place finish from Annie Brewer '21, Angelesia Ma '20, Katherine Ashe '21 and Campbell Swift '21 in the 200 medley relay, followed by a fifth place from co-captain Alex Lin '19 in the 200 free with her lifetime best time; Ashe placed eighth, just off her best time from the prelims. Brewer placed 10th in the 200 IM with a great swim, and the trio of Ellie Thorson '21, Dorka Nagy '19 and co-captain Alex Wolf '19 place third, fifth and seventh in the 50 free with best times, pulling in 42 points in a single race. Cecilia Raymond's ’20 diving title, along with Jane Ogden's ’19 third place and Ola Szopa's ’20 eighth place finish from the Feb. 27 diving championships added another 47 points to the Martlet total. Ashe added an 11th place finish in the 100 butterfly, and Thorson, Wolf and Lin were back in the 100 free with fourth, sixth and eighth place finishes. Sydney Schuster ’21 dropped five seconds in her 500 freestyle, and then the girls relay team of Thorson, Wolf, Nagy and Lin headed to the blocks with their sights on a school record in the 200 freestyle relay. Thorson, Wolf and Nagy swam the first three 50s super fast, giving Lin a .03 second lead as she dove in for the final leg. Lin pulled away, posting the fastest split in the meet and securing the event title as New England Champions in the 200 free relay, smashing the school record by over a second with a time of 1:43.34. After a brief photo shoot on the awards stand and some recovery swimming, along with a 13th place finish in the 100 backstroke from Brewer in her best time ever, Nagy was back in the water for the 100 breaststroke, earning sixth place, while Ma took 11th, lowering her best time by another second. Less than 15 minutes later, Nagy was behind the blocks again with Thorson, Wolf and Lin for their grand finale, the 400 freestyle relay. Thorson led off again, swimming the fastest 100 free of her life, followed by a great split from Wolf. Nagy, fatigued but determined, posted a fast split also, but once again the fate of the relay was in the hands of Lin. She needed a split of 57.0 — just about her best — to help her team break the school record. Powered by the courage and the emotions of her teammates and her own internal power source, Lin touched the wall in 55.68, establishing a new school record of 3:48.05 and securing third place in both the relay and final team standings. It was an unbelievable finish to a great day of fast swimming, and marked the end of an unforgettable season. The girls fueled — and were fueled by — the "out-of-nowhere" team victory by the boys, tremendous leadership and spirit, and the faith and determination to swim with poise and passion. In the end, they left their mark in the Westminster Swimming and Diving history books and had a joyful (and tearful) celebration of their accomplishments. The coaches couldn't be prouder. Congratulations, girls!
