Martlets Ground the Pelicans

The Martlets had some business to manage before they could enjoy a day off from classes as a result of the Hill Holiday on Feb. 14. Loomis won both contests a year ago, but Westminster was able to earn another good win by outlasting the Pelicans to win 4-1 with an empty netter at the end. To their credit, Loomis competed very hard, and was able to generate some excellent scoring opportunities throughout the game. Their top two lines were quick in transition, and made the first period, in particular, very challenging for the Martlets. However, as Westminster got its feet going, and began to control the puck a little more, the tempo and play was dominated by the team. Plenty of scoring opportunities generated three goals, and Ian Shane ‘20 was spectacular between the pipes, stopping 39 of 40 shots. Loomis’ only tally went off a Martlet defender and found the back of the net. Iggy Belov ‘20 scored one in the first period off a great rush from Ryan Pineault ‘20, who got the puck to the right spot in front. Tyler Kinney ‘19 worked himself into a great position alongside the net in the second period, and he hammered home a rebound. Darion Benchich ‘20 was persistent in neutral ice, and he received a great pass from Sean Clarke ‘19. Benchich went in alone and made it count. Belov was able to earn another goal with an ENT in the last few minutes of the game. It was another good win. Berkshire is up next.
